Not what I expect from an SF, but it most definitely both of those :-) The cover calls it an eco-thriller, and that is apt. A rip-roaring Greenpeace-on-steroids fiction for all who loved The Monkey-Wrench Gang!
I did have a hard time getting into this, but once I was able to synch with Stephenson's style, we were off and running. And swimming ~~in the sewers, in the PCB-laden harbor, up the proverbial paddle-less stream~~ AND I enjoyed his twisted sense of humor :-)
Fast-paced, funny, full of toxins, and not for the faint of tummy~

Man, this one was weird - but in a good way. If Thomas Pynchon and Rachel Carson ever teamed up to write a novel, "Zodiac" probably would have been the result: environmental consciousness with a hefty dose of freaky, off-beat goodness.
