The Walk West: A Walk Across America 2

I felt obligated to read this after Peter Jenkins so inconsiderately leaves the readers stranded in Louisiana at the end of A Walk Across America (which should have been titled Half a Walk Across America by truth in labelling standards).
I found this book to be much more tedious than the first. For one, there are more religious references. For another, I get the impression Peter is not having as much fun, especially being burdened with the responsibility of another human being on the trip. Cooper the dog was a better travelling companion than Peter's wife, Barbara, but then, Peter's relationship with Cooper was better overall, too. It's ironic (and disturbing) that Peter bleeps out swear words so as not to offend, but blithely describes behavior toward his wife that is abusive.
So little of interest is relayed. They get stalled for months in Colorado waiting for the snow to melt in June so they can continue, then after a brief description of Utah and Mormons, Peter says autumn is approaching. Months passed and nothing happened except that they got the heebies from polygamists?
For the most part, the Jenkinses do not sound like they are enjoying themselves. Most descriptions are about enduring punishing heat or wicked cold. They are most excited and upbeat when visiting with their own family members -- which they could have stayed home to do. It seems they did not want to do the walk, but felt like they had to finish. About the same as I felt about reading this book.
Sending to peace-filled, to follow the first. (02-10-11)
