A little birthday surprise!
Journal Entry 3 by ApoloniaX at Covent Garden, Greater London United Kingdom on Saturday, January 29, 2011
A brilliant, powerful masterpiece! The poetic beauty of the writing is often in stark contrast to the violence, the brutality, the suffering of torture, rape, war, explosions, murder… of Afghan history. And as the content suggests, this is not superficial writing, this goes deep. It’s a complex novel, full of moralities, without taking sides. It’s got something of a thriller, or spy fiction, at the same time it’s a history book, and it’s a novel about love (but not of the sweet kitschy kind) and friendship. Characterisations are excellent - there are several main characters, whose backstories are slowly revealed. They all meet in a house in the countryside near Jalalabad, a fascinating house – with books nailed on the ceilings, with murals covered in mud, with rooms dedicated to the senses. This is a novel that will stay with me for long. And even though it’s only February I know that it’s one of the best books I read this year.

This was a book worth reading.
Now its going on to its next reader, for the wish list tag game.
Received with thanks!
This was a daunting read. A lot of suffering for nothing. Unfortunately it appears to be a realistic description of life in Afghanistan, and that makes it even worse.
It is well written and has interesting characters, but I can't say I enjoyed this much.

Thank you very much for passing it on!
I have finally finished this book. I say; finally, as I have been reading this one for months. Some times I managed to read quite a bit at the time, other times I just needed a break from some of descriptions.
This book is both wonderful & horrible, it describes a fascinating house where people meet, interact, hide, love and hate. The book is really well written, the characters (and I do consider the house one of the characters) come true to life. However, it is not a book I liked reading, the setting, which to me felt realistic, was far to gruesome to enjoy. It is a book worth reading, though.
