A heart-warming story with Southern flavour.

Synopsis from Amazon
Lily has grown up believing she accidentally killed her mother when she was four. She not only has her own memory of holding the gun, but her father's account of the event. Now fourteen, she yeams for her mother, and for forgiveness. Living on a peach farm in South Carolina with her father, she has only one friend: Rosaleen, a black servant whose sharp exterior hides a tender heart. South Carolina in the sixties is a place where segregation is still considered a cause worth fighting for. When racial tension explodes one summer afternoon, and Rosaleen is arrested and beaten, Lily is compelled to act. Fugitives from justice and from Lily's harsh and unyielding father, they follow a trail left by the woman who died ten years before. Finding sanctuary in the home of three beekeeping sisters, Lily starts a journey as much about her understanding of the world, as about the mystery surrounding her mother.

Firstly, thanks to Tanabaka for this great novel. I enjoyed very much the characterisation and was pleased to see how a story with so much grief and dark moments could be told in a way that will also bring a smile on the reader's face... without giving away too much, I would like to say that the fact that the novel is written with the protagonist telling us her story, a young girl who one day decides to go and look for her roots, keeps the narrative light, but still intriguing. I was glad to have this book on the Eurostar the evening of the blackout in London... thanks to the delay I could finish it just 10 minutes before arriving in London :-)

This book will be sent tomorrow to Fofum....enjoy :-)

I enjoyed this very much - Sue Monk Kidd describes the places so well that you can almost feel the heat in some parts of the story. I did think the plot rather fizzled out towards the end - too many convenient coincidences I think.
I did like the way the story was told through the eyes of the young girl and I think that we really did see the people and events from her point of view. Sometimes this meant that we didn't have a full picture of what was happening - but as I read on I began to like that. It allowed you to try and work out what was happening 'around the edges' of Lily's experiences.
Quite a few of the characters seemed a bit eccentric - but then I suppose they would to a girl with all the troubles that Lily had. What shone through was a wonderful feeling that love puts things right in the end and despite its rather sad story, I found this a really uplifting read.
Thanks for sharing it, Tanabata. It is now on its way to the deep south....Kent!

I enjoyed this book - in some ways it reminded me of Beginner's Luck. I sympathised with the main character.
One thing the book really brought home to me was that we talk of racial prejudice these days, but it is a lot better than in the times the book was set, when the prejudice was grounded in laws and really affected all those it touched.
Not as much about bees as I'd expected (not sure what I expected, to be honest!), just some very good characters. May was wonderful, and I'm sure Mary will stay with me for a long while.
Just waiting for the address to move this one along :-)

9 out of 10

I actually finished this book a week ago but have been ill with a really nasty dose of the flu so sorry its taken me a while to journal.

I loved this book. From beginning to end i was completely hooked and couldn't put it down. I think for me, it was the injustice of the whole situation which made it so compelling. The fact that stories like Rosaleen's were so common in the past, and also, stories like Lily's.
I really liked the character of May. I think i saw some of myself in her - and i don't think that's a good thing! ;-)
I could relate to her difficulty detaching from other people's sorrows.
I also loved the statue of "Our Lady". I'm not religious myself but this really stuck a chord with me. I don't want to give too much away but when August talks of us all having some power within us, i found it very moving and i really thought "That's what i have to tell myself when i have something difficult to do".
Anyway, this is a really rambling entry, so apologies... i'm a bit spaced out from the cough medicine etc. I just wanted to say i thought it was a great book and it really moved me.

Thank you, Tanabata!

A very beautifully written novel which I enjoyed reading very much! I was quite hooked by the story and liked the characters.
What made it even more interesting for me to read were all the descriptions on processing the honey and the keeping of the bees since a friend of ours used to be a beekeeper. And I just realized how much he actually told me about it when I was a kid and how much I still remember. So reading this book brought back some almost forgotten childhood memories.

Off to Tintti in Finland today.

I loved this book. I was hooked by it (as many of you were) and couldn't put it down once I started reading. I think the story has the same kind of wisdom and warmth as Fried Green Tomatoes by Fannie Flagg.

Is there going to be a movie based on the book? To me, August looked a lot like Whoopi Goldberg.

Also the facts about bees were fascinating - and I ate quite a lot of toast with honey while reading this book. :)

Update Dec 23: Sent to blacksheeps99 today.

Thanks a lot for sharing this "honey-bitter-sweet" novel!! I loved the (female) characters and the lovely style (one can really feel the heat - even if it ist cold and wintry outside!).

It was really interesting for me to learn more about this time period (1964): the signing of the civil rights act (it´s only forty years ago??), racial attitudes and the robotic exploration of the moon, in preparation for the planned moon landing,...

Will be on its way to Italy soon!
