Journal Entry 1 by Minerva101 from Calgary, Alberta Canada on Wednesday, January 26, 2011
I really enjoyed this book! My first reaction was `Yay! a Canadian novel that`s not about an orphan in the arctic! Yaay!`
I think I liked the main character alot because he kind of reminds me of me as a teen(though I am not a boy and I don`t have a nut allergy) and he kind of reminds me of my own son who is currently a teen(and yes he`s a boy, but no nut allergy).
Yes - the book is a little message driven, but honestly it doesn't take away from the story for me and the writing is just very good. And after I read it I went out and bought myself a pair of purple corduroys. Yup - totally stylin`!
My favorite line `He has no filters`- `He just says what comes into his head.`
:)

Product Description:
Twelve-year-old Ambrose is a glass-half-full kind of guy. A self-described “friendless nerd,” he moves from place to place every couple of years with his overprotective mother, Irene. When some bullies at his new school almost kill him by slipping a peanut into his sandwich — even though they know he has a deathly allergy — Ambrose is philosophical. Irene, however, is not and decides that Ambrose will be home-schooled.Alone in the evenings when Irene goes to work, Ambrose pesters Cosmo, the twenty-five-year-old son of the Greek landlords who live upstairs. Cosmo has just been released from jail for breaking and entering to support a drug habit. Quite by accident, Ambrose discovers that they share a love of Scrabble and coerces Cosmo into taking him to the West Side Scrabble Club, where Cosmo falls for Amanda, the club director. Posing as Ambrose’s Big Brother to impress her, Cosmo is motivated to take Ambrose to the weekly meetings and to give him lessons in self-defense. Cosmo, Amanda, and Ambrose soon form an unlikely alliance and, for the first time in his life, Ambrose blossoms. The characters at the Scrabble Club come to embrace Ambrose for who he is and for their shared love of words. There’s only one problem: Irene has no idea what Ambrose is up to.In this brilliantly observed novel, author Susin Nielsen transports the reader to the world of competitive Scrabble as seen from the honest yet funny viewpoint of a boy who’s searching for acceptance and for a place to call home

OPINION

I loved this book with great characters and an engaging story that ended too soon - I wanted more! The descriptions of the landlords upstairs, reminded me of my childhood friends' homes, only the ethnicity was Italian, not Greek, but the love of food and hospitality was the same, and the plastic slipcovers on the couch.
I relived my holiday in Vancouver through the author's descriptions of Granville Market; I wish I had enough Airmiles for a quick vacation.
Thanks again, Minerva101, for a great book.

CONFESSION

Confession: I am a Word Nerd. ;)

As an avid player of Literati, the free version of Scrabble on Yahoo, I was instantly intrigued when Minerva101 offered this book up as a ring on the forum. The idea of a novel about a Scrabble club was too unique to pass up.

The novel was so engaging I could hardly put it down. I felt for our poor protagonist Ambrose almost instantly, with his imitation Nikes (Ikes) from Chinatown and his hot pink fanny pack that his mother forced him to carry his Epipen around in. How could you not sympathize for him having to go to middle school like that?

The author does a good job with characterization, from Ambrose having no verbal filter, to his overprotective mother, to the school bullies that Ambrose refers to as The Three Stooges, and of course, Ambrose's ex-con neighbor Cosmo. There's a lot of humor, but the background of the story was grounded with reality. The author paints a realistic picture of just why Ambrose's mother became so neurotic and overprotective--it's hard to blame her after the tragedy she went through with her husband. The writing reminded me a little bit of Louis Sachar but for a slightly older crowd.

Thanks for sharing this book with us! I contacted the next person on the list for their address.

I devoured this in about three days. Yes, it does remind one of Louis Sachar. I think
this may be the first Canadian YA book I've read. Very funny and believable.
(Are there a lot of Canadian YA books about orphans in the arctic? I guess we don't
get 'em down here - only Farley Mowat and Lucy Maud Montgomery)

DELIGHTFUL

Like rureading, I wanted more! Minerva101, can you and your son look around and find any more books like this to share? Don't know if I can find any purple cords in my size, but I can easily knit the striped toque. This is also nice because I'm going to Vancouver this August, which will now be an extra treat.

I really liked and believed in all the characters (except the Three Stooges, of course), and was completely swept up in the plot. My only quibble is that at the end Ambrose comes up with a great insight about his mom, and of course he's spot on. Since he's previously been pretty oblivious to social cues, I'm not sure how credible that is. On the other hand, he's been prepared by noticing someone else's possibly similar situation. When I mentioned this to DrSlump, he looked at me at said, "This is YA, what do you expect?"

Anyway, this was a great pleasure to read. Thank you, Minerva101, for sharing it!

Nevermind the orphans in the Arctic, it was a treat to read a good YA novel that is not concerned with the supernatural, or with bratty teenage girls (I noticed those themes a lot when looking for books for the YA VBB).

I echo what other readers have said about the great characterisation, with the possible exception of Irene, who I felt came close to a stereotype of a protective mom at times – her protectiveness just felt irrational and overdone at times. But I suppose it was necessary for the story.

Also, I liked the character of Cosmo, who shows teen readers that good people can get trapped in bad situations, but that it's possible to overcome problems.

Finally I read it before the holidays - and I liked it a lot!

I can't say anything else than all the other JEies before, just that I think it's a very good book for teenagers who are being bullied like Ambrose. It shows that there's always a solution. I might buy a copy for our class library too.

I also liked the way Ambrose finally told his mum that he doesn't want to move - again! With no filters! I was happy for him that he found friends in the Scrabble club.

I've already Tsjara's address and will send it on next week.

I definitely liked the book, it was very heart-warming. I loved Cosmo's character and his relationship with Ambrose and Amanda. I'm not sure I totally bought Ambrose's mother though. While we were definitely seeing her through Cosmo's eyes he seemed to be so open minded towards other people, but just wouldn't seem to give her a break, so she really came off as just over-the-top and a bit nuts.
