Purchased from Friends of the Library at Lakes Regional Library in Fort Myers, Florida! I have always wanted to read this book.

About the book from www.shmoop.com (Link): "... In A Nutshell: Zombies! Black Magic! Riots! A Rum-Soaked Caribbean Honeymoon! Squishy Bugs! Monkeys!

OK, so we were kidding about the monkeys, but all that other stuff? It's all in Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, and it's widely considered a literary classic. How could this be, you ask?

Jean Rhys first read Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre in 1907, when she arrived in England as a teenager. As a native of the Caribbean herself, she was "shocked" by Brontë's portrayal of Bertha Mason, Rochester's Creole wife who was locked up in the attic. Nearly fifty years later, Rhys turned the story of Brontë's "madwoman in the attic" into a full-length novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, which pretty much established Rhys as one of the greatest novelists in the twentieth century..."

March 22, 2013: Re-reading a beautifully bound copy of an old favorite, Jane Eyre, so that I can be prepared for the NEXT book I'm going to read ... THIS ONE!

April 3, 2013: Started this book today!

April 4, 2013: Finished in one day! Interesting idea to choose an obscure character and build a story around her ... Now looking for a way to share this book. (Offered as a RABCK.)

I found this book waiting for me when I got home from work today. It looks like a real treat, but I may re-read Jane Eyre before getting into this one to refresh my knowledge of the story and characters.

I enjoyed this book because I like Jane Eyre so much. I didn't find the story all that believable in relation to the original story but it certainly gave an insight into a culture I know very little about and how relationships can get so tangled.

Released 10 yrs ago (5/25/2013 UTC) at Public Library Main Branch (Bob Harkins) in Prince George, British Columbia Canada
