Dave Barry talks about what happens when a humor columnist is occasionally assigned to cover an actual news story. "More Lies, but Some Actual Journalism." Picked this one up on my first trip to The Book Thing of Baltimore.

Dave Barry is always a good bet when you need a laugh. The first section of this book covers topical themes from 2000 to 2002, including the Democrat and Republican Conventions, the 2000 election and the recount, and the 2002 Winter Olympics. These entries hold up very well if you remember the events, or just have a general knowledge of them. Other columns are timeless Barry and wonderfully refreshing after too many serious reads. The best work in the book, though, are the last 2 columns -- the first from right after 9/11 and the second from the first anniversary of 9/11. Both are very serious works and show that Barry is a truly talented writer, not just a guy who makes booger jokes, but as he pointed out at the end of the book, he doesn't want to write serious columns, because it means bad things are happening -- he prefers the booger beat.

I have always enjoyed Barry's humor. This book did not disappoint with some laugh-out-loud parts. I found his essays about the Democratic and Republican conventions timely as this year's conventions are looming ever so close. Also, as a resident of Utah, I enjoyed the essays about the 2002 Olympics. As stated by a previous journaler, some of his essays are timeless which made for an enjoyable, quick, funny, and light summer read.

A collection of some of Dave Barry's work, starting with the 2000 Republican & Democratic conventions and the election which followed (the infamous vote recount in Florida). Next are some pieces he wrote on the 2002 Winter Olympics and then a random collection of pieces on topics ranging from using (or not using) the "good" towels to ice fishing in ND. He closes the book with two serious pieces on the events of Sept 11th.

For me, this was the perfect book at the perfect time. The book I read previous to this one was a slow, detailed, read over 900 pages long. This was the perfect book to follow. It was light, the pieces of work were short, and at times laugh-out-loud funny.
