The remarkable autobiography of an autistic girl.
Donna' account of her struggle to come to terms with her conditoin and to survive the suffering enforced by an unsympathetic, ignorant world is a unique insight into the workings of an autistic mind. She could have been locked up: instead, against the odds, Donna achieved a place at universitiy, lived independently, and has written this remarkable insider's view of autism. Thank you so much for your generosity, saskiasosmile! This book seems to be really interesting and I was happy to get your hint of the other book, too.

This was a remarkable book, written with insight! The story was a bit disconnected, however, and not so easy to follow. In the case of Donna I started to wonder, what was the meaning of the child neglect and abuse for her autistic features.
I'm glad I had a possibility to read this unique book, it's really worth reading! I have a new reader for this book, so it will travel soon...

'Extraordinarily gripping' - Good Housekeeping

Labelled de af, abnormal, nut, retard, spastic, mental, moron, 'blonk', crazy, weird, wild and insane, Donna Williams lived in a world of her own. She existed in a state of dreamlike recession, viewing her incomprehensible surroundings from the security of a 'world under glass'. Few people understood her, least of all Donna herself, and she yearned to become 'normal'.

At the age of twenty-five, Donna discovered a word, a new label, which brought with it a handful of answers, a chance for forgiveness and hope for a sense of belonging: that word was autism.

Donna's account ofher struggle to come to terms with her condition and to survive the suffering enforced by an unsympathetic, ignorant world is a unique insight into the workings of an autistic mind. She could have been locked up;
instead, against the odds, Donna achieved a place at university, lived independently, and has now written this remarkable insider's view of autism. Her book is a landmark in the literature of mental health, a work of outstanding courage, and one of the most extraordinary human stories you are ever likely to read.

'Remarkable autobiography... the first ever description by a sufferer of autism of life in the grip of this lonely condition' - Me

Yes, this is a remarkable story. I was also wondering about the child neglect and abuse. What was the meaning of them for Donna. On the other hand she was autistic to start with. But would her life been easier with different kind of parents.
This story was rather different as a book from another autistic autobiography - written by Temple Grandin. Still they have very much in common. Both had severe difficulties when growing up and eventually they learned to cope with the outside world rather well.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this remarkable book.
Too bad that an autistic girl was born to an environment that did not have the right means to deal with the condition. So sad. She learned to communicate with the world quite well in the end. I was wondering also about the "other personalities" she had. Is that usual in severe autism?

I agree with the previous readers; what a remarkable story. I felt so bad for her, but luckily the story was sort of happy in the end. I hope nowadays people are more aware of autism than when she was young.

The book was released at the local meet-up.

I took this with me (as the only book!) from todays meet-up. Certainly touching.

This is a very important book as it gives a very welcome insight into a life of an autistic person. Donna's ability to describe her inner world certainly helps us understand autistic people better and behave accordingly. Nevertheless, I found the storytelling somewhat tedious, which is why I only read the beginning and the rest of the book then partly. It might of course depend on my mood, too, which wasn't the most suitable for such a slow book. I hope the next reader, whoever it is to be, will enjoy the book more.
