Thank goodness real life isn't quite this action-packed. This novel, the 11th in the series finds the detective team of Jemma and Duncan trying to take a break from their professional lives in London by journeying to Duncan's parents' for the Christmas holidays. Alas, there is no rest for this duo and it quickly becomes a web of family drama and crimes in the otherwise idyllic setting of Cheshire. Lots of local charm and fascinating details about area canals and the boating community. And the ending is a real nail-biter.

Another excellent mystery from Deborah Crombie and many more fascinating glimpses into a world I knew little about, all the canals and boating people of this area of England. The relationship among the ongoing characters continues to be satisfying. Children play a much bigger role in different aspects of this tale, and they can by endearing, scary, sad, heroic... as well as the adults can. I love Crombie's writing style which never seems jerky or forced. I'll be sending this on the my bookcrossing friend to whom I have promised the series as I read it!

Received this & 2 others in today's mail as a wonderful surprise from MmeClinton. Thank you! I've got a few books I have to read first, but then I'll be starting back into this series.

Thanks for remembering! (And as always, if you see anything you would like in my AVLs -- slim pickings, I know) -- please let me know!)
