This book has been recommended to me by just about everyone I know. Maybe my expectations were too high?? Half of the plot - the story of Sarah and her brother - is just brilliant. But every time the narrative switched back to Julia, I wanted to throw the book out the window. I don't think I've ever come across a more snivelling, self involved character in literature. It just seemed to me that this very serious topic deserved a more deserving framework! Still, I hope to hear from others who like the book and can share it's strengths with me! Available now.

Loaned this book to my mom to keep her company during radiation treatments and subsequent rest. She loved it and was so sorry to have it end; she described that feeling of loss of finishing a good book and not yet wanting to let it go. But she let it go back into my hands so it is on the TBR pile again.

I really wanted to love this novel, especially as I know a movie is being made from it. What I experienced instead was a deep respect for this author's ability to shine a light on a little known aspect of holocaust history. However, I am a fan of literary fiction, and would have enjoyed this more if the writing had enriched the story rather than detracting from it with its simplicity. I had a few "Dan Brown" moments when chapters ended with obvious cliff hangers. Not my favorite style, but worth the read because of the subject matter. Thank you for sharing it, and I will look to pass along to another BCer.
