The Big Sleep: A Philip Marlowe Mystery (Penguin Fiction)

Last year I read The Maltese Falcon, and this really reminds of that. Philip Marlowe is a private detective hired by General Sternwood to take care of a spot of blackmail. The case is not straightforward, especially with the involvement of the general's two daughters.
This is a tale of blackmail, murder, gambling, coverups and all narrated with no nonsense hard talking Marlowe.
Entertaining read with snappy dialogue.

Arrived safely today. Thanks.
I am moving to China - hence why not a lot of time to read recently.
This book will be in a box being picked up tomorrow, and hopefully I will see it again in about 3 months time on the other side of the world.

This book has survived its ocean voyage in a container ship and has successfully met up with me here in China - much sooner than expected. Now it will be sitting in its new home waiting to be read. Starting a new life and job in China means I am not getting much time to rea dat the moment, but it will not be forgotten.
This book has been packed in my back and will soon be on its way to Thailand with me for a holiday. Hope I have time to read it.
Read while visiting Thailand.
I do enjoy vintage crime/mystery, though this was my first Marlowe story. It was a quick read as it was fast paced; lots of action and double crossing. I found that I could not help but but picture a black and white movie, film noir, while I was reading.
I would read others in the series, which shows it is a good read.
The book is now back with me in China awaiting a new journey. I am afraid that it is looking a little worn around the edges due to being in and out of my bag while on the move. It also has a few water marks due to the fact that I went into a fancy shopping mall in Bangkok I had to put my bottle of water in my bag; it leaked.

It has arrived! Thanks for mailing it my way, bookowl1000. I think it's the first book I received from China.
I'm hoping to read this during the winter holidays, and looking forward to it. I have never read a Philip Marlowe story.

Dark, quick, dangerous. My impression was quite similar to bookowl1000's. It was interesting to see so much colloquial American from more than 70 years back. And wow, the amount of liquor that gets poured in these kinds of novels...

I confess I would have liked to keep this book for longer to read it again and just to *have* it, it's travelled such an unusual route... But I saw sense: in a few months, I would have to get it back to Germany somehow, and it's a 1001-library book anyway so I would have to give it up sooner or later anyway.
So now, in a few days, this book will be travelling again: I found a new reader in the forums, hayes13 in Italy.

Arrived this morning, thank you!
Wow... I think this book gets a prize for greatest distance travelled! It will have a sedentary life for a while on my bookshelves. I hope to get to it soon... (Ha!)
