On the way to KiwiinEngland, who chose this from the VBB.
Safely received in Ireland, thanks for sending this from Africa. I look forward to reading it.
I enjoyed this story, about a boy growing up and trying to make sense of the world of adults. The situation in Nairobi at the time adds to his confusion.

Posting as a RABCK to Luxemborg. I hope you enjoy this book.
If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it.
Thanks a lot KiwiinEngland for this RABCK! I look forward to reading it!
Interesting read, I knew very little about the political situation in Nairobi in the 60ties. Difficult to be a child with only adults around and with little contact to the outside world...

Ohhhhh this looks good and interesting. Thank you!
A deep read. Interesting about memory and being a child in an adult world. This one will stick with me I'm sure.
Sending as part of my bookversary RABCK. Enjoy!
The book is here.
I've spent my early childhood in Mozambique (Africa) and my best friend at the time was a black young man, who took care of me when my parents and siblings were away, for work and school. We lost contact with him, after we left to Portugal, during the independence war in Mozambique. Hard times. I still miss him.
I think this will be the perfect book for me. I hope I can survive it...
Thank you so much for sharing.

Oh, this book has brought me into tears. I miss my childhood friend. The only photo I have at home is of him. I was six when I left Mozambique. He wrote us a letter once, but he forgot to put his address on the envelope.
I truly enjoyed the way the book ends, and it is indeed a book worth reading.
It will now go to Brookler's shelves because she as chosen it from "First Sentence" VBB, hosted by russbaum.

I just got this, having chosen it by its first line, "I was the first to spot Ernest, and later, when he came to be part of our lives, I always thought of him as my discovery, my secret, like the lizards I kept in my pillowcase," in the First Sentences VBB. Thanks, looks very interesting.
