Journal Entry 1 by wingGoryDetailswing from Nashua, New Hampshire USA on Friday, December 31, 2010
I've been enjoying this series since I stumbled across the first volume, and have been picking up more volumes as I find them. I came across vol. 5 in Borders today, just out, so I had to have it - my official Last Book Bought of 2010! [Its TV Tropes entry can be seen here.]

At this point in the series, Natsume is beginning to find himself with a family and friends who don't bully, tease, or avoid him due to the yokai he can see - but he still doesn't trust them to know the truth, and does his best to hide his reactions while trying to free more yokai from the Book of Friends. When he goes to a remote country inn with his classmates for a cram class, he spots a mermaid in the water, and things begin to get tense... and scary, what with the whole mermaid-flesh eaten for immortality thing. But the story doesn't go to Mermaid Saga lengths, and Natsume unravels the mermaid's problems in time to free her name, though not without a heroic intervention by Nyanko in his super-demon form!

Another story has Natsume getting entangled with the plot of an angry yokai who's been messing with a girl from Natsume's school; he does his best to help her, and again things get tricky for a while there - including a spell where Natsume stops seeing spirits and, surprisingly, isn't happy about it. (I can't figure out why poor Natsume isn't stark staring nuts yet, with things always jumping out at him and yelling and kidnapping him and all...)

And then there's the one where yokai invade Natsume's home - and he learns that his uncle has past experience with yokai himself. This doesn't quite turn into a true-confessions bonding session, but it opens Natsume's eyes a bit, and is very touching.

A bonus chapter features a look at Natsume from the viewpoint of one of his schoolfriends, Tanuma, who is vaguely sensitive to spirits himself - though he can only sense and sometimes hear them, not see them.

Nice addition to this lovely, touching series.

I plan to leave this book on a bench or statue in the park at around 5:30 or so. (If there are any yokai in Nashua I expect they'd like this spot!) Hope the finder enjoys the book!
