Journal Entry 2 by futurecat from Christchurch, Canterbury New Zealand on Thursday, October 26, 2006
My family used to have a game we'd play in restaurants: each of us would pick a group of people sitting nearby (though hopefully out of earshot!), and make up a story about them - who they were, what they'd been doing that day, why they were at the restaurant, etc. In Nether Regions, Beverly, who has been robbed of speech and movement by a stroke, plays a similar game during her weekly hydrotherapy sessions. As she floats helplessly in the pool, at the mercy of her well-meaning physiotherapist, she weaves stories around the other women in the pool, creating lives for them, and coming to believe that if only she can find the right story, perhaps she will be released from the prison of her body.
