I lived in Japan for 6 months and loved to read books of Americans trying to sort out the cultural differences that cropped up. This should be fun, since it's an Israeli perspective. Might use it to fill either the Japan or Israel slot for 666 challenge this year (6 books, 6 countries on each six continents).

Book has arrived safely in Spokane. Looking forward to reading it.
This is one of those books that I'm not sure why it sat on my bookshelf for so long before I read it. I really enjoyed this book. I've not been to Japan but would love to visit someday. This book gave so many details about living in Japan it felt almost like I was there. I could not put this book down and stayed up way too late reading it. I will be putting it in my next travel narrative bookbox, which is starting soon, so it can find a new home.

So, this was a book that I both found enjoyable and frustrating. I had to remind myself multiple times that this was being written through the cultural lens of a foreigner to Japanese culture. Also, as this was written in 1996 and many of the statistics mentioned were from the 1980's I was left wondering at times if they were significantly different over twenty years later. Some of the author's insights about things she witnessed in Japan seemed a little bit dated even for the times she was writing about. But there was also some very interesting stories about the author's life as a teacher of Hebrew in Japan.
