The book L.A. Candy by Lauren Conrad, really gave me an insight on what happens behind the scenes on a Hollywood reality television show. It seemed to have a connection to Lauren’s personal life in the way that there were specific details that also came across in her hit shows The Hills and Laguna Beach. Although, I have not seen too many of either show’s episodes, these details were still evident. Details such as the cameras following the characters around everywhere they went and the plot being scripted to a certain degree. I enjoyed how this book took you through a journey of each character’s life and how it showed that if you get caught up in the Hollywood-act, it would likely take you over.
I did, overall, like this book, but there were some definite pros and cons that came along with it. I liked that it was simple to read and that it was kept interesting. But, for the same reason, I did not like it. I did not like that every detail was completely laid out there and that there was not any one situation that left you to think on your own.
Overall, L.A. Candy had the theme that no matter who you meet or what city you move to, to not let it change who you are and to never lose sight of where you have come from. It also had the theme that you should keep your true friends close and to not get caught up in the rush of the city. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books that involves drama, some romance, and searching for who you are.
