I read this book back in 2005 and thought it the most compelling and wonderfully written book. The characters are brilliantly portrayed, and yet you loathe them. It's the writting that is the real star of this book though, and the tough uncompromising nature of the story.

Certainly a thought provoking book, with a twist at the end that surprised me even though, when thinking back, it was telegraphed throughout the book. This is not a functional family, but I also felt some sympathy for the mother and Kevin, but less for Franklin (probably because the voice is that of the mother??)
Shortly before his sixteenth birthday Kevin Kathchadourian kills seven of his fellow high-school students, a cafeteria worker and a teacher. He is visited in prison by his mother Eva , who narrates n a series of letters to her estranged husband, Franklin, the story of Kevin's upbringing.

Got this wish granting RABCK from the very kind KatWeeble. Thank you very much this book is a part of my quest to read my way through The Whilcoulls Top 100 List (2010 - As voted for by New Zealanders). I will read and release.
What an intense, harrowing, and thought provoking read. The format of the book is a series of letters written from a Wife to Husband is brilliant. It allows a level of intimacy - which at times made me so uncomfortable, as it felt like I was covertly reading some ones diary - that I don't think could bad achieved any other way. Letter writing is a completely different style of writing.
Eva is desperately soul searching where and how her life had gone so wrong. Throughout most of the book I really felt like she was the hard done by victim. Then toward the end I had a (stupid) look at the Reading Group questions which made me question everything. Nothing seamed so clear cut any more. How honest are most people really with themselves? It's amazing how everyone involved in a situation can all have completely different views on what happened and why.
In the end I'm not sure quite what I got out of this book (even though the journey was fascinating). But I think the letters were self therepy for Eva (and yes, I know she isn't real). Still - amazing!

This is an amazing and well written book charting the marriage, childraising, pending divorce and ultimate destruction of a family, with the eldest child Kevin resorting to mass murder. Quite chilling, and although utterly detestable, can't quite help feeling a tad sorry for the kid.

Thank you Andrea99!! So nice of you to send one of my wishlist books! I've already started reading it! :-)
This took me a little while to get into but once Kevin was born I was hooked from there. Very thought-provoking book.
On it's way to MmeClinton. Enjoy!!
Received yesterday from devon612 down in Florida to satisfy one more wish list book! I did see the movie and so know the story, which is horrific and yet logical.... still wanted to read the book, as Lionel Shriver is a fine mind and a fine writer, so I look forward to it. The book is still in great shape after so much international travel!
