I love the way Elizabeth Chadwick recreates Medieval England, taking her readers into a time and place so very different from our own. I was delighted to find one I've not yet read on the bookstall in the market in Stratford-upon-Avon during a short break in the Midlands last weekend.
Reserved for millycat, another BookCrosser who appreciates EC's novels!

Amazon Editorial Review: "The early twelfth century is a time for ambitious men to prosper, and royal servant John FitzGilbert Marshal is one of them. Raised high as the kin of the deceased King Henry battle each other for England's throne, John reaps rich rewards but pays a terrible price for the choices he makes - as do his family. His wife, fragile, naïve Aline is hopelessly unequipped to cope with the demands of a life lived on the edge and, when John is seriously injured in battle, her worst nightmare is realised. Sybilla, bright, forthright sister to the Earl of Salisbury, finds herself used as a bargaining counter when her brother seeks to seal a truce with his troublesome neighbour, John FitzGilbert. And then there is Sybilla's small son, William, seized hostage by the King for John's word of honour. But sometimes keeping your honour means breaking your word...."

Elizabeth Chadwick is in her element when writing fictional biographies of 12th century characters. This one follows John Fitzgilbert, sometimes referred to as John Marshal, from his time as Marshal to Henry I, through the twists and turns of the Stephen-Matilda/Maude Civil War, to the peace which led to Henry II's accession to the throne.
He was the father of William Marshal who has two novels of his own: The Greatest Knight and The Scarlet Lion - both as highly recommended as this one!
It's a page-turning tale of a man and his family in a time of war: Medieval-style war with sieges and hostage-taking and such like ....
