This is the first in the "Russell Quant" series by Anthony Bidulka.
Quant is a Private Investigator living in Saskatoon, an ex-cop who's enjoying his laid back practice but hoping for something exciting.
His next case is just that. One half of a gay couple goes missing the night before his wedding and leaves his groom standing at the altar. The jilted groom is anxious to find out why his lover suddenly left him and hires Russell to chase him down.
Russell gets a free trip to la belle France but comes back even more confused than before he left and then the case takes a more interesting twist when Tom, the groom with cold feet, turns up dead.
I really, really enjoyed the character of Russell Quant and also the easy going, tongue in cheek, self deprecating writing style of Bidulka. The characters are all engaging and interesting and well rounded for a first novel in a series and I am now searching out copies of the rest of the series. If the subsequent installments are as good, I think I may have found a new favourite!

Taking to a bookcrossing meeting tomorrow.
