One thing I really like about Colm Tóibín is that his books always surprise me. The Story of Night explores the life of a young man, half British, half Argentinean, living and working in Buenos Aires against the background of the start of the Falkland’s war and after. Exploring his awakening sexuality during this period was hampered by social restrictions and taboos. Tóibín handles the narrative with great skill, you never feel like a voyeur, rather you grow to empathise with Garay’s predicament and sense of isolation right to the end.
