8 out of 10

On my To-be-read list: watch this space!

Updated: 8 April 2004

I started this today - lots in the first few pages that grabbed my interest instantly.

A very unusual book. Style of writing is note form in places, with the occasional newspaper headline - after all the main character, Quoyle, is a journalist.

Before starting this I knew absolutely nothing about Newfoundland. I learned a lot about the unique way of life there, and the influence that natural surroundings can have on communities.

This has been offered as a bookring, batting order as follows:

1. rachels-ratty - journalled 12 May 04
2. Camis
3. Jords

Updated June 17, 2005: Bookring seems to have stalled so the falling will be transferred onto a list for a replacement copy I bought today.

4. ermintrude75
5. ReetPetite
6. Leukonoe
7. kert01
8. Normy
9. FabClaire
10. PatchworkPerson
11. Gooner

Cheers Chris! It's next up on the precariously tottering stack that is Mt ToBeRead...

10 out of 10

Wow, my first 10 out of 10 book for the year, thanks so much Chris for sending this to me first *huge grin here*

I have to admit that when I began reading this I came very close to throwing in the towel - the writing style is unlike any I have come across in novel form. Suddenly though, somewhere around page 70 the book came to life and I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it. Good job I'm naturally a night-owl!

The poetic prose lends itself perfectly to the simple tale being told, the descriptions relayed constantly throughout the book were so perfect and in all a real eye-opener to me. Have seen this in a bookstores (on many occasions) and have never even picked it up. The film version (so I'm told) was hidious and on that basis I have always turned it down, discounted it. Shows how wrong a pre-formed opinion can be at times...

I knew precisely nothing 'real' about life in Newfoundland before this book; now I feel I know a great deal. Life is hard up there and that came across so clearly in the book. Nothing major happens; as in this isn't an all action type of read, but it doesn't have to.

Off to camis as soon as I've done writing my full review of it ;-)

8 out of 10

An enjoyable read, although like rachels-ratty I almost gave up before I'd really got started. I did find it quite slow in places, but the descriptive writing was enough to keep me hooked.

Thanks for starting this bookring Gooner - the book will be on its way to Jords tomorrow.
