I found the first volume of this series to be utterly delightful - granted, I'm a total cat-person - so I used my most recent Borders coupon to pick up volume two so I could follow the continuing adventures of Chi.

Among the many Classic Cat-behavior bits: the scene where a sleeping Chi is so very, very cute that the family hovers around her exclaiming at her cuteness, only to wake her with their attention and make her stalk away. How often has one of mine given me the "Enough, already" eye-roll. But then when the family gets caught up reading the news from a friend and ignores Chi, well, Chi goes to considerable lengths to get back in the center of things - by lying down on the postcard!

This volume introduces some drama in the form of a huge black cat who roams the neighborhood stealing food, and who even saunters into Chi's apartment, where both Chi and the family's young son can't quite figure out how to get it to leave. (When Mom gets home we have a charming scene in which both Chi and Yohey describe how they were defending each other from the vicious beast.)

Other scenes include Chi "helping" Dad while he's working (by batting around crumpled papers, pens, and pencils), "comforting" him when he's sick (by pointing out, with loud cheerful mews, the birds flying by outside),

Among the more poignant bits are the longer and longer intervals in between Chi's memories of her mother and siblings; they're clearly fading as she settles in happily with her new family (after all, Chi doesn't know that pets aren't allowed in their apartment complex), but they do crop up now and then. Like the one where she drops off on Dad's chest, with her little face buried in his sweater, as vague memories of her mother float past and she thinks "I wonder what this feeling is?"...

Lots and lots of "Awww!!" in these books, quite a few laugh-out-louds, and the occasional sniffle. I love this series!

[See its TV Tropes page here. And I found that there's an anime version (done in very, very short segments), viewable online here.]

This book is an adorable book full of sheer adorableness and I scooped it up as soon as I looked at that kitten on the cover. However I made the mistake of showing it to other people in our cat-crazed household and have had trouble getting out of someone's hands long enough to journal! I suspect it will loved and enjoyed by all and then passed on to another cat-lover.

GoryDetails covered the plot pretty well, plus it is a simple tale without complicated plot twists resulting in long, tricky explanations.

The art is too cute and perfect for expressing the dramatics of feline emotions. There were times (like during Chi's tantrum about having her food eaten by another cat or her excitement over the "muilk") that I was laughing out loud simply over the perfectness of the artwork. There were several panels that if someone printed them up poster-sized I would have an really hard time not buying. Definitely a book filled with "awww" moments and a few that will tug the heartstrings of cat-lovers. Those familiar with manga may be surprised to notice that it is in color rather than the more common black-and-white.

I haven't a single complaint about this book other than it makes me want more! Luckily I have a public library that I can get interlibrary loans through.

I have a friend who I think could use a good dose of cute to cheer her up on a grey day, so I think she will be the next to get it.

I bought this book to add to our library's children graphic novels collection, since the first copy of volume 2 is getting grubby. The story is adorable, and will definitely become a timeless classic since cute cats transcend time and trends. This is probably the last journal entry for a long while since it found its "permanent" home for the next few years. Until then, happy reading!
