'It was unbelievable to Joe that this smart pretty girl was the tragic, ragged figure that he had last seen on the road in Malaya, sunburnt, dirty, bullied by the Japanese soldiers...'

Acclaimed as one of the great novels of our time, Nevil Shute's magnificent and moving story of courage and endurance, of enterprise and love, of war and the aftermath of war has sold more than half-a-million copies in PAN paperbacks alone.

'A gallant story, told with an uncanny insight. From a little-known incident in the war against Japan, he has contrived a gripping novel of an English girl's courage and unflagging faith in humanity' The Scotsman

Ollut hyllyssäni vuosia lukematta. Hankkinut varmaan silloin, kun tv-sarja oli televisiossa. Parasta antaa eteenpäin.

I enjoyed this a lot, sort of to my own surprise, too :) (I forget why I originally added it to my wishlist!) I found the story engaging, particularly the Malaya section, and the characters likeable. A very enjoyable, traditional novel - old-fashioned in a good way.
