Journal Entry 1 by tara-K from Oegstgeest, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Friday, July 25, 2003
I had this book in my hand before I picked up Tulip Fever. I wasn't even going to buy any books today. I didn't want to leave it once I had it my hands, so I bought them both. I'm starting a Bookring on this book. Are you interested? Email me @ tara_k@yahoo.com If you sent me a PM before 30July, I didn't get it. Please send it again. "Adair Colley had just turned eighteen in November of 1864 when the militia arrested her father and tried to set the house on fire...So begins the extraordinary tale of a fierce young woman swept into the current of America's Civil War. Leaving the hills she calls home, Adair marches boldly into enemy territory to find her father. Denounced as a spy and thrown into a women's prison, she grasps at any chance for freedom - even if it's to be found at the hands of her Union interrogator. Only then can she fight her way back through the wilderness to find love and family again." What’s a bookring and how does it work? A bookring is when a book passes from person to person based on the list of members involved. The last person mails it back to the bookring owner. To join this bookring (or any other bookring of mine) please private message me. I will be glad to add you to the list. New members are added all of the time so be sure to check the list of participants before you mail the book to the next in line just in case! Once you are a bookring member you will receive the book from the person listed before you. When you receive the book please make a journal entry stating that you’ve received it. Then read it as soon as you can (no absolute hurry, just be reasonable please :o), and journal again with your thoughts. You’ll then need to private message the person on the list after you for their address. Mail the book by media mail (it’s cheaper!), and make release notes on the book only if you’d like to. Then sit back and watch the continuing journey! I'm still reading it. Sorry it's taking so long. I'm trying hard to find the time and get it finished before we leave on vacation. :) The members are as follows: fanclub (Hawaii) clawdette (Louisiana-USA) dragonfly4 (Canada) Talkland (UK) tho (Portugal) Zyana (Portugal)<------in possession of Try and contact the following 2 people, if you get no response, return the book to me (Tara-K) Theresa-A (UK) No response to emails pa007 (UK) no response to emails

Journal Entry 2 by tara-K from Oegstgeest, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Tuesday, September 09, 2003
I've finally finished it. It took me a while to get into the story. Perhaps because I was unable to sit down and read it for longer than half an hour at a time. Once I got past the first 50 pages or so, I found it hard to put down. It was a quite different book than I was expecting. This was not the story of Scarlett O'Hara to be sure. Adair was an educated young woman living in the wrong place at the wrong time. I hope you all enjoy the book as much as I did. As soon as I have the address for fanclub in Hawaii, it will be in the mail.

Journal Entry 5 by fanclub from Baltimore, Maryland USA on Wednesday, October 08, 2003
I finished this book yesterday. I really loved it. I have read many other civil war fictional accounts, but this is the first one from a woman's perspective. I loved Adair and found myself holding my breath whenever she was in a tight spot. Thank you so much for sharing this moving work with me! Sending on to Clawdette today!

I received the book today. I'm in the middle of one right now and will get to it in the next few days. Jan 5 - I've been trying to reach Theresa-A for over a week without any luck, and there doesn't seem to be anyone registered as pa007. So I'll be contacting tara-k to see what to do next.

The book is finally on its way to talkland. I mailed it today. I had some trouble getting into this book. I found it dragged a bit at times, when Adair was on her own. But whenever she would meet another character, especially her encounters with the major, things really picked up. It got better as it went along.

I didn't know that much about the Civil War and the role in which women played. The images that came to mind were Scarlett O'Hara and Tara! The writing style of the novel was a little unusual and took a while to get use to. I wasn't that keen on Adair and found other characters more interesting. The excerpts at the beginning of chapters from various historical documents were what caught my imagination the most.

I had a hard time reading this book, especially due to the writing style of the author, as other BCers have also pointed out... But as book that tries to portray the difficulties of women's lives during the American Civil War, I think it accomplishes the purpose. Adair's problems and struggles seem real enough, and although she's not the most likeable of heroines, you have to admire her courage. Funny coincidence, I read this book after recently going to the movies and watch "Cold Mountain". These two books have the same setting, but explore different perscpectives, although I liked Charles Frazier story much more. Btw, I wasn't expecting to enjoy that movie as much as I did, so that was a good surprise :-) Will be passed on to Zyana very soon.
