Mysteries

The first three stories in the 'Mystery' series - the adventures of the Five Find-outers; Larry, Daisy, Pip, Bets, Fatty and Buster the dog. They may not be politically correct but in my opinion Enid Blyton's are still some of the greatest stories for children around.
These are some of her best and contain two of my favourite characters ever; Fatty and Mr. Goon the policeman!

Sent to mfa - hope you enjoy it!
just got the book on the post - thanks deerskin! i should still know these books by heart, but i never got the chance to read them in english, so i'm looking forward to reading it.
i took this book to my mom's place yesterday, and she couldn't stop laughing - she said she could picture me twenty years ago, reading the exact same book, but in portuguese... and i had to explain to her what a difference a language and twenty years can make - to start with, the translation leaves some details out, such as FATty's name ("gordo" over here, which is quite a rude expression and has no connection at all to his name's initials) and the joke with good old "clear orf".
most of all, i wasn't aware twenty years ago that enid blyton was a big imperialist, sexist and other nice stuff...i hadn't written my ma dissertation yet, and so i was lucky enough to get hold of her books and haven't stopped reading ever since. however, the mysteryes series does not sound so old fashioned in its values as the famous five or the mallory towers, i must say.
i know i should go for more demanging stuff, but all i want right now is the read the remaining books in this series...
thank you very much for this ring, deerskin!
ps: i took the book to a boocrossing meeting this weekend, and everybody loved the cover.

Now I have read two stories of the three. I am certain this series wasn't translated into Finnish. I don't remember ever reading about these characters. The first books in The Famous Five and the Adventure series were published in Finnish when I was in the right age to read them. I am sure I would have loved these as a child of ten to twelve!
How nice to read a book like that. It makes me to remember my childhood and the big hunger for books. There were not plenty of them around. The libraries of the village and the school were soon read through. My teacher was so kind that he gave me the key of the book case. So me and my friend could read all the 200 odd books during the winter months while others could get only one book per week. Luckily the school library contained mostly books that the village library did not have.
I don't understand why my children did not like Blyton's books. I tried to introduce them but daughters said that the five is eating all the time and it is boring. When I was a child I did not notice any such thing.
Nancy Drew was popular, though. It is an old series, too.
Mostly my daughters were interested in the horse and riding series. There are some very productive writers of those books in Finland, but my daughters read all the translated ones too.
My son is not a reader and he was read to as a small child as much as the daughters if not even more.
The book is going next to caligula03. I hope she has a nice time reading it!

Mysteries was sent to Caligula03 some days ago. Economy mail may take some time - sometimes it is rather slow sometimes not. I wanted to find a little surprise for Caligula's little one and the posting was delayed consiquently.
Happy reading Caligula!
PS. It is winter and snow in the northern countries at this time of the year.

The book has arrived safe and sound. I will read it as soon as I can. :)
I have to agree with Deerskin -- Frederick aka "Fatty" is a great character. The mysteries being written for children are a tad easy to figure out and the language is a bit too jolly for me. Nearly every other sentence uttered by one of the Five Find Outers contains an "I say--" which is as bad as the Hardy Boy's over use of "golly." Nonetheless, a very enjoyable read.

Wow. Found on my doorstep when I returned from a mini-trip. I'm adding this to Mt. TBR and hoping that it will be a quick read.
A quick fun read. As others mentioned, the Fatty character is a jewel. Off to the next ring member as soon as I can get it going...
This arrived in my mailbox for some reason today. (I thought I had skipped just about all the rings I was on, but lo and behold, a 'gift'.)
Not sure if I'll get the chance to read it before I go back to TN.

Well, I was wrong about the translations into Finnish of this series: Actually the new editions of the 70's were translated into Finnish. But I was past the age of reading them. And I did not visit the children's department of libraries as my children were not born until in the 80's.
Some weeks ago I found the 9th book of the Finnish translations of the Mystery series: The Mystery of the Vanished Prince or Kadonneen prinssin salaisuus at a second hand book shop. It was quite readable. I wonder how many books this series contains. 15 books in the series are mentioned on the back cover.
Greetings to all of you participating this bookray!
PS. I don't have the book. It seems that Fly46 still has it.
