Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2010. "Ruprecht Van Doren is an overweight genius whose hobbies include very difficult maths and the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. Daniel ‘Skippy’ Juster is his roommate. In the grand old Dublin institution that is Seabrook College for Boys, nobody pays either of them much attention. But when Skippy falls for Lori, the Frisbee-playing Siren from the girls’ school next door, suddenly all kinds of people take an interest - including Carl, part-time drug-dealer and official school psychopath …"

Teenagers are disgusting. Howard was pathetic. Skippy dies in chapter 1, ensuring that I didn't care because he hadn't even been introduced. I really hated this and did not read it in full. It must have something going for it but I missed it.

Wow, I was harsh... I guess I just wasn't in the mood for this book. It's unlikely that it will get another chance from me, but please be assured that I didn't read it properly and it could well be much better than I think.

Journal Entry 5 by miss-jo at Sydney, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, July 28, 2011
So I've had this book for months (for which I am very sorry). Normally when that happens it's because I've forgotten I had the book, or because I've started it, put it down, and not yet picked it up again. In this case there was a little from column A, and a whole lot from column B. I wasn't actually compelled to read the book, but I couldn't bring myself to let it go without finishing it. Every time I'd think "I'll just skim parts of the rest and get rid of it" I'd find myself interested in what was happening again and decide that I really did want to finish it after all. It's actually a well-written book with some interesting situations, but the characters are annoying enough that I could never give it the reading that it deserved. Hopefully it'll find someone to love it now that it's off on its travels again. I'll pm jubby. Thanks for your patience in this one fleebo.
