CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I hope you enjoy this book, Oedde.
I hope you enjoy this book, Oedde.
It has arrived safely - thank you!
Because this book was small and light, I took it on my Easter holidays and started reading it on the train. I just finished it - wishing I had taken a different book...
The story wasn't anything new to me, I have read similar stories before, and this one wasn't different enough to be interesting. I didn't think it was particularly well written, either. I don't have much to say about it, except maybe that I found neither Caithleen nor Baba likeable or interesting. Now I know that I won't read the other two books in this 'Country Girls Trilogy'.

This book is now traveling to the UK, where Danielle23 would like to read it. I hope you enjoy it more than I did.
Happy travels, book!
Happy travels, book!
The book has arrived safely and very speedily might I add. I enjoyed 'In The Forest' by this author so hope I enjoy this one too. I'll get to this as soon as I can and get it back onto the 1001 library shelf xx
This book was a quick light read and I really enjoyed the beginning. However, towards the middle of the story I came to thoroughly dislike Mr Gentleman for (for want of a better word) grooming 14 year old Caithleen. I also disliked Baba's running away with a much older man.
A strange book and unless the others of the trilogy are on the 1001 list I don't think I'll be reading them.
Thanks for sharing, that's another 1001 book ticked off the list and this book now goes back to the library xx

Off to it's next reader; Heaven150 from Canada. Enjoy the book xx
This is the second book I've read by Edna O'Brien and I enjoyed it. I like O'Brien's easy writing style. While I didn't really like Baba very much I found myself relating to Caithleen (I was a bit of a follower as a teenager myself). I don't think the other books in the trilogy are part of the 1001 books, I still may try to find copies to read (I found I was wanting a bit more from the ending).
Is now available again for 1001-library members.

Many thanks for sending my way - I read this many, many, many years ago & now look forward to re-reading it...

Ireland in the 1960's - still extremely Catholic - still extremely provincial... this is not the Ireland of today where we would think very little about easy, open sex. It is an Ireland before computers & the Internet...
Take this setting & then follow the tender, fragile, emotional lives of two young 'Country Girls' growing up during this period...
Life in Ireland much like the rest of the world is starting, but oh so slowly to change...
Edna O'Brien tenderly & sometimes painfully shows us what many if not all of us have gone thru. in our lives - the uncertainty of adolescence, the agony & the ecstasy of growing up...
I found this an enjoyable read & will look to read the other two books in the trilogy - but that said am not sure I would have placed it in the catagory of a 1001 book....

Oppem, the Bookcrosser who previously journalled this book, passed away on June 23, 2012. I had the privilege today of meeting her dear family and "catching" her large collection of registered books.
I've never done anything with the 1001-library, so if there's a certain protocol here I should follow, please let me know! Otherwise, this one will likely go out to someone who is specifically asking for it on a wishlist. I'd hate to have a well-traveled book lose it's momentum!
