Dear Reader,

I will never forget the sensation of being awakened at about 5 a.m. on April 23, 2003. It was as if supernatural powers were shaking my bed. I couldn't sleep after that and wanted to learn all I could about the earthquake that morning. It was only a moderate earthquake, rated 4.9 on the Richter Scale, and there was not significant damage to buildings, loss of life or injury, probably because the earthquake struck so early. It was felt however all through the northwest corner of Georgia. It's epicenter was in Menlo, Georgia, about 37 miles south of Chattanooga. I could not believe that people slept though it--but they did. I will never forget it. It made me wonder why earthquakes are not named as hurricanes are. I also live near much igneous rock, that is rock that was formed ages ago by volcanic eruptions. The most famous is Stone Mountain, one of the largest monadnocks in the world. Once on the similarly igneous Panola Mountain where I had gone to work for an assignment in art class, I became lost in the beauty of the rock formations as I sketched with charcoal. I was left behind and the class and instructor had to return to fetch me. So I enjoyed looking through this book. I hope it will be appreciated by many readers to come.

There's a interesting website, I found, for volcanic history and activity all over the United States:

www.vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/home.html

My son is going to LOVE this. He checks out just this kind of book at his school library. Most of the kids his age are checking out series fiction (nothing wrong with that), but my son is hauling home in his backpack large, and sometimes heavy, science books. He is going to be sharing facts about volcanoes and earthquakes with me for days and days as he reads this.
Thanks for sharing this!
