Book One of The Belgariad. Your average garden variety farm-boy-of-dubious-parentage-saves-the-world story. I was crazy about this series when I was a teen and didn't realise how very derivative it is. It's still entertaining, and the characters are more fun than in the derivative-of-a-derivative Eragon series.

I do admit, I loved this series as a teenager. I'm loathe to get rid of my copies because of that, even though I'm not sure I'd enjoy them now!
