AMAZON.COM REVIEW
The "Vampire Clan" was a loosely knit gang of Southern U.S. teenagers who played at being outcasts and goths, and then pretended to be vampires. The twisted fantasies and dark mind of their young leader, Rod Ferrell, dominate The Embrace. Aphrodite Jones wastes no time in getting inside the troubled 16-year-old's head, detailing his elaborate delusions (he sometimes claims to be 500 years old; at other points, he was born 60,000 years ago and "sent to earth to destroy it") and his eerie abilities to control other troubled souls. With a Jim Jones-like knack for bizarre showmanship, Ferrell picked up followers and "true loves" with ease, then led his small, unmerry band on a mission from his home base in Kentucky to pick up yet another groupie--15-year-old Heather Wendorf--in Florida. The journey ended in violence in 1996, however, when Ferrell decided to kill Heather's parents with a crowbar. The group (Heather in tow) fled to New Orleans, where Rod promised his "vampire friends" would take them in; they were arrested a few days later. Ferrell, who now holds the record as the youngest inmate on death row, still insists he's the Antichrist.

Jones's account is rather spare, but feels balanced and honest. Like untold thousands of other American youths, Ferrell had the requisite bad childhood and unpleasant memories to later cause him both melancholy and grief. But unlike most of his peers, Rod Ferrell seems to have been born with a genius intelligence and the ability to memorize names, accents, and customs from different eras and places with ease, along with a talent to "perform" what he claimed to be. That he also happened to be deranged shouldn't be overlooked, but the real tragedy and concern here is that there might exist a rip in the fabric of our society large enough to allow healthy, normal teenagers like his group to fall through the tear and into the arms of animalistic hucksters like Rod Ferrell. --Tjames Madison

For some reason I really love this book. It a true story about these kids that got so into the vampire "culture" that they kill the girls family and took off across the country. A very interesting read.

Sorry about having this so long! I've finished it and will send it on as soon as I get an address.

All in all, I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I would. I found the writing style to be okay at best and I never could get into the stories surrounding the people involved.

This book arrived in my mailbox today. I'm currently in the middle of reading another, but will get to this very soon, and journal once I've read.

A 'real-life' vampire story...who could pass that up?! Well, I tried a couple times to get into this book, but after 34 pages, I've given up. The writing just seems...flat, and I was uninterested in the characters . However, truth be told, its probably NOT the book, but me. I think I have just recently discovered that I really don't like true-crime novels. *shrugs* Guess I'll just stick to the 'fake' murders! (lol)

Anyway, I don't want to hold this up while I struggle with my own genre preferences, so I will be passing this on to tish2002 (couldn't locate hy3d00) in the early part of next week....Thank you for sharing this book, First-Noel, I appriciate the opportunity!

I didn't like this as much as her other book "All She Wanted". I got tired of reading about the blood drinking and strange beliefs that these kids had. It made the book too long and kind of boring. I really just wanted to read about the crimes.
Rod Ferrell reminds me of Charles Manson. His ability to make these kids believe in his grandiose delusions is so similar to Manson. I believe that they both have the same kind of brain damage due to drug use.
I think that Rod should have been the only one held accountable for the murders. He committed the crime. He told so many stories that I doubt that the kids who knew he was planning it, really believed him. I feel really sorry for Heather. Even if she did say something about killing her parents, I doubt that she was serious, or realized he would really do it.

Received today and have already started it. Came at a perfect time. Mixed feelings so far, but I will post again when I am finished.

7.7.04 Finished this pretty quickly. It was an interesting story. I didnt like the writing style very much and normally I dont get into "true crime" but this book held my interest. Its shocking and scary how easily our kids can be led into things like this. Sending off to theguttu.
