First of all Nicki is not 19, but a 21 graduate of university trying to make it a a screenwriter. This is very different to 19, though you can understand her parents lack of enthusiasm when she tells them she is pregnant.

At first this seemed just like any novel detailing a young womans fear of becoming a mother and being left behind by friends and boyfriend who are starting to be successful. It was about page 270 before the "nightmare" began, which if I am being honest I was a bit bored and the book seemed to consist of nothing more than descriptions of being pregnant, having a baby and what they baby was doing, even down to what outfits he wore. I persisted as I had been given the book by a friend and I knew that I would have to tell her what I thought.

Once the "nightmare" had begun I could see that the protracted descriptions surrounding the baby emphasised how important he had become to their lives, which meant you felt the impact of the "nightmare" more deeply. The book then became more interesting and heart wrenching.

The book did have unexpected twists and turns; I certainly did not guess what the "nightmare" was going to be, and afterwards there were stil some 'red herrings'. I had even misunderstood what 'the choice' was until near the very end. I was not that keen on the way that the story was wrapped up though.
