Picked this up for cheap at the second-hand bookstore on Rue de Midi.

From the back: "By cunning intention, and sometimes by discreet bribery, Outer Maroo has managed to keep itself off the map. And yet people do stumble into town, because the seduction of nowhere is hard to resist.

Opal draws most of them. The word itself is like a charm. You can stroke a word like opal. You can taste it. You can swallow it whole, raw and silky, like an oyster. And then Oyster can reel you in.

Cooooooooooooooooooooool. Looking forward to this one! Lots of great reviews on the cover, etc... will get to it soon.

Hmmm.... this was a weird book: so intense, yet so slow... yet so well written... yet so hard to read in some ways. It was good--- there was a huge amount of quality writing, great language, allegories, dynamic characters, etc....

I think maybe it was the story itself, and how it unfolded--- we didn't really learn enough information at the beginning, and at some point you need to throw a dog a bone and give the reader something to keep the story moving. It just felt so slow and plodding sometimes. But at other time so overwhelming and human and sublime.

Sooooo.... very well written, distinct voices, characters and stories. Such as Mercy, and her secret ghost Ms. Rover, Jess finding her voice, the town full of manipulated silence, car bombs, unearthly opal, religious fervor, fear and rebellion. We never really get to know Oyster too well, even towards the end when the story starts to really unfold a bit. His character was one of charicature, but then maybe he was supposed to be--- no one could know him or touch him, even the reader.

Anyway, a good book, but a long book and a difficult story to get into. If it had not been for the great writing, i probably would have abandoned it part way through. But the writing was worth it. Hope the next reader enjoys!
