I really enjoyed this book by Larry Niven. It was first printed in 1973 and the sci-fi story stands up even today in 2010. Niven always writes quality sci-fi!
Product Description(from Amazon.ca)
Phssthpok the Pak had been traveling for most of his thirty-two thousand years. His mission: save, develop, and protect the group of Pak breeders sent out into space some two and a half million years before...
Brennan was a Belter, the product of a fiercely independent, somewhat anarchic society living in, on, and around an outer asteroid belt. The Belters were rebels, one and all, and Brennan was a smuggler. The Belt worlds had been tracking the Pak ship for days -- Brennan figured to meet that ship first...
He was never seen again -- at least not by those alive at the time. --This text refers to an alternate Mass Market Paperback edition.

The rule is 'Don't judge a book by it's cover!" I am so happy to share this at the Sci-Fi/Fantasy BC meeting at the Joshua Tree.
Happy reading!

Looking forward to reading some 'hard-core' sci-fi.
Thanks Minerva101 and it was great to chat at the Meetup.

The science described in this novel was very plausible despite my very limited knowledge - where is Sheldon Cooper when you need him? Interesting, compelling storyline with clever transitions, for example pg. 166 ' And the air was full of the smell of burning bridges.' Perfection.
Now to track down this author's books while anticipating what other delights this author has written.
Thanks for another winner, Minerva101.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Taking to the October "Opportunities, Occupations and Old Books" Meeting. I got this one quite a while back- for this month I pulled all the books on page 1 of oldest still in hand, plus all the occupation books and chose from both piles.
This was was pretty good - harder sci-fi than I'm used to but I did enjoy it!
To the finder:
Calgary has an active group of BookCrossers that meet to swap books and discuss book crossing every second Saturday of the month at 11am at Cravings Market on Fairmount Drive SE. We always love to meet new crossers, so please join us any time you like!

Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing October meet-up. The cover looked totally bizarre so I just had to take it.
I'm sad to say that I didn't enjoy this book as much as the last Larry Niven novel I read, which was The Long Arm of Gil Hamilton; it feels like both books are set in the same setting, too. The third section, "Protector" was the most interesting bit, since it starts out as a mystery, but the rest, I think, sort of flew over my head. Maybe it was all the science that was involved.
Passing on this book to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing January meet-up.
Forgot to journal this back in. There were no takers at the meeting, but the book has a sticky note with names, so I'll pass this along at the next gathering.
Passing this book on to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing February meet-up.
Picked this up at the Calgary February BookCrossing meetup.
I really enjoyed this. It was a hard sci-fi story that felt classic, yet had several new elements that caught me off guard.
The space battles, alien cultures, time lines -- all were very well done.
Highly recommended to any sci-fi fan.

Taking to the extra December Calgary BookCrossing meetup.
I picked this up at an interim meeting of the Calgary Bookcrossing Group over Christmas. I'm looking forward to it.
Its been ages since I read a relatively hard, out-there sci-fi book and I have missed it. This was so great. It was tense and interesting and the ending blew my mind.
Returning this, at long last, to the Calgary Bookcrossing Group.
Picked up at a recent bookcrossing meeting.
Taken to the February meeting!

Picked up at get together
Interesting set of stories. Definitely some old school sci-fi, so a bit slow in places but very engaging in others. Thanks for the interesting read!
Taken to get together
Forgot to journal that I got this book back last meeting - oops!
