From Library Journal:
"In this translation of a best-selling novel first published in Japan in 1987, the young narrator, Mikage, moves into the apartment of a friend whose mother is murdered early in the tale. What seems like a coming-of-age melodrama quickly evolves into a deeply moving tale filled with unique characters and themes. Along the way, readers get a taste of contemporary Japan, with its mesh of popular American food and culture. Mikage addresses the role of death, loneliness, and personal as well as sexual identity through a set of striking circumstances and personal remembrances. "Moonlight Shadows," a novella included here, is a more haunting tale of loss and acceptance. In her simple and captive style, Yoshimoto confirms that art is perhaps the best ambassador among nations. Recommended for all fiction collections."

This book, which I enjoyed very much, is now on its way to megami-no-ushi.
I've heard so much about this book - it didn't disappoint! While I'm not in a place in my life where the subject matter is close to home (thank god) I thought it was a beautiful exploration of loss and grief and recovery. Thanks Mathgirl40 for sending me this lovely little book!

My pick from the wrapped book exchange at the BC 10th Birthday Bash today.
Poor Mikage and Yuichi. These two were so confused emotionally that I thought they were teens not young adults. While I was interested in the descriptions of Japanese everyday life, I was impatient with the main character's immaturity.
Taking the book to the Calgary BC Meetup at the Joshua Tree Cafe today.
Picked up at the August Calgary BC get together
Two short fluffy stories where the heroines are confused and trying to figure out life. They read just like girly Japanese dramas. Just what I needed!
Thanks for the awesome read~

Taken to get together at the Joshua Tree Cafe
Picked up at the November meeting.
Taking this to the February meeting at the Joshua Cafe.
My turn, looking forward to reading this one soon. Thanks for the chance.
This was such a sweet story and I really enjoyed it. I was disappointed that there was a second story in this little book because I wanted to hear more about Yuichi and Mikage.
Thank you again for sliding this across the table at me, "You have to read this one!"

Picked up at the February Calgary BookCrossing Meeting at Cravings.
This is a very interesting book. I loved the theme of non-traditional family and the juxtaposition of Japanese and Western culture. Definitely a must read.
To be released at the Calgary BookCrossing group meeting at Cravings Market.

I've only had 1 foray into Japanese literature, so I'm interested in expanding my reading list to include more.

Great book. The style of writing/translation really did it for me. I liked the first novella better than the second, but both were very good.
I got my first ever food craving from reading a book. Had a Katsudon the next day -- so good.

Bringing to the October Calgary BookCrossing meetup.
I haven't read this book as of today
This is book that I probably wouldn't have bought and read, but I'm glad that I read it. Yoshimoto writes in a such a charming way, you can't put the book away and the Japanese family and characters are so intriguing ,especially the young people who are going through sadness. I really enjoyed this book and would read more by this author.
Picked this up at the monthly book crossing meeting at Cravings Market Restaurant.
Returning to Calgary BookCrossing group
Got these from a BookCrosser to return to circulation. I am sorting the books and either passing directly to a Calgary member who has requested it or returning it to the person who introduced it to the group. Hopefully this one will find a new reader soon!
Will wild release this well travelled book.
Taking to work to start our communal bookshelf!
