A photographer goes to a small island off the New England coast to do a photo-essay about a murder which occurred there more than a hundred years ago. She becomes obsessed with the story of those people and their time, and wonders how marriage could survive the long stretches of loneliness. As she works, her own marriage is in trouble, and harsh weather is having an effect now, as it did all those years ago.

Finally got around to reading this book. I really enjoyed it, my only problem was that I read it after I watched the movie. I hate when I do that.....

I'm sending this book to a friend. I hope she enjoys as much as I did.

I have seen the movie, listen to abridged version on tape and finally got around to reading the book. The writing was superb but there are holes in the plot which can't be ignored. The prose has a rhythmic quality and I liked the idea of the two stories being interwoven but I don't think the idea was quite pulled off.

Bought the book from a charity shop in town "AGE CONCERN". Great fan of Anita Shreve - Fortune's Rocks the best? Started to read it this morning whilst breakfasting in the garden and will pass it on to my mother who is also a fan (she lives near London) PS GREAT BOOKMARK LEFT INSIDE from kiptrix THANKYOU!
