I had read this book as a teenager many, many years ago, but decided to re-read it as it showed up as one of the 10001 books you should read.
Found it a very enjoyable re-read & very well written. Loved the character of Long John Silver...

Thank you "oppem" for posting, sharing and organizing this wonderful bookring.

Journal Entry 4 by Simson-Shilitoe at Neewiller-près-Lauterbourg, Alsace France on Monday, February 7, 2011
I signed up for this bookring because I like books about the sea very much. I have never read this story before. I usually buy second-hand-books on www.booklooker.de but this book was not offered in a really good and cheap version over the last months.

It was an excellent read, never boring, and narrated in style that you could think to be a part of the story when reading.

A great book and as good as some other famous novels about the sea: Mutiny on the Bounty, The Sea-Wolf, Moby Dick, The Old Man and the Sea.

Finished the book on Sunday within 8 hours and just some minutes before midnight, interrupted only by 2 unexpected Alfred Hitchcock movies (The Birds, Vertigo) on German television. A great Sunday.

Posting to "Bloedengel" in Belgium as soon as I get an address.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

It was not what I expected it to be. I got a bit bored at times. I think it's my own 'fault' though. I expected a more 'literature'like book with the piratestory as the framework.
And a beautiful framework it was, but

ho-ho 15 dead man and all the rum you want ... it was 'only' a piratestory :)))

Maybe it's because of some of Stevensons poems I like so much I got carried away beforehand :)

Now of to shovelmonkey ! Enjoy !

Received today - thanks to Oppem for starting this bookray and to bloedengel for sending it on to me. It's second from the top of the bookray pile so it won't be long before it moves on again.

Ahar me hearties I feel like a true hand before the mast after reading that rum yarn. I can't believe that I never read this story when I was a child, or that none of my family (at least the seafaring element of it) ever read it to me either. This book is bench mark or perhaps the plimsoll line by which all other levels of piracy should be judged and while I am very fond of Johnny Depps camp pirate swagger and salty one liners, he is clearly not an (eye) patch on the duplicitous and colourful Long John Silver. A brilliant story even if it is highly unlikely that a bunch of hardy sea dogs would be bested by a child like Hawkins. Also loved the descriptions of Ben Gunn and his life on the island which were clearly inspired by Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.

Oo-arhhh - This book arrived ashore today. Thanks all for sharing. I'm looking forward to this one as I remember reading the Ladybird edition when I was younger!

A bit more blood thirsty than the Ladybird edition of the book I remember reading as a youngster :) An enjoyable read and another 1001BTRBYD down.

Thanks all for sharing. I'll get this book in the post to ETMadrid once I have an address.

EDITED 22/04/11: Posted to ETMadrid today.

I got this when I worked out which was the key to my new letter box, a week ago. I'm now reading it whilst on holiday.

Thank you very much indeed for the stickers!!

I really enjoyed this - perfect holiday reading! I too find it hard to believe that I had never come across this when I was younger. I was surprised by the connection with Bristol, to where I also have a connection. Lucky I'd forgotten that I was for a time the last one on the list, as I'd have probably left it next to the parrot's cage on the beach. Disappointingly, this parrot could (or would) only say 'hola', and I couldn't muster out of it a 'pieces of eight' or even an 'hasta luego'! So many authors recently had mentioned this book that I decided I should find out what it was all about. I'd really forgotten all about pirates (I've not seen any pirate films recently) and their buried treasure, and really enjoyed the refresher course! 'Robinson Crusoe' should be next perhaps...

Journal Entry 17 by wingNakipawing at Lisboa - City, Lisboa (cidade) Portugal on Thursday, February 6, 2020
This bookray ended with me and in a way I'm glad it did, with a set deadline I don't think I would have made it to the end of this book... it took me 3 tries to get pst the first few pages!
I like pirate stories, and I like seafaring stories, I relate to all of them because working at sea is my job. I too dreamed of having my own treasure hunt pirate fighting, castaway fantasy story when I was a child, but the real piracy stories of the 21th century have me have nightmares that are as far from the story I read.
I was Jim, and I was Long John Silver and this is what I like the most about reading books that are meant for a younger audience, they are thrilling and they have an underdog hero that saves the day... and the lotery that we all dream of is now a big shinny pile of gold burried in a tropical Island.
I really got lost in this book, and I'm hoping it will continue to be enjoyed by many other readers.

P.S. - This is a book by oppem, a bookcrosser that I dearly miss, her generosity was beyond anything I could ever accomplish, may she rest in peace in a library full of her favorite books!
