'Passion. Treachery. Murder...
Orphaned by Rome's savage legions, Thea, a slave girl from Judaea, has learned what it takes to survive. She knows only violence until a chance meeting with gladiator Arius offers a shred of tenderness. But their bond is severed when Thea is sold again, condemned to rot in squalor.
Years later, a singer known as Athena betrays no hint of her troubled past. Catching the eye of the Emperor himself, she is swept into a world of decadence and depravity. But although Domitian fears betrayal from every side, he is unaware that the greatest threat lies next to him - a slave girl who has come to be called the Mistress of Rome...
THIS BREATHTAKING EPIC UNVEILS A DAZZLING EMPIRE RIDDLED WITH SECRETS, DROWNING IN BLOOD.'

I'm on a bookring for this book, but found this copy for £2.50 in the Huntingdon branch of the British Heart Foundation in very good condition so snapped it up :)
Looking forward to reading this one, as it smacks of the same spirit as 'Gladiator', and I really like that film!

Not my usual Reading fayre but I really enjoyed this book, which turned out to be more than a swords and sandals affair.
Thea, a teenage Jewish slave, serves the spoiled and selfish daughter of a well to do Senator and Gladiator owner. Lepida Pollia is the epitome of the Roman Bitch, and though her words drip with honey she is a poison snake, out for all she can get, and she doesn't care who she steps on to get what she wants. Lepida wants to seduce the teenage Arius, a slave gone to gladiator, who has been bought from Northern England (probably near Hadrian's Wall) and doomed to die for his captor's entertainment. His superior fighting skill keeps him alive and popular with the 'fans', and when Thea, delivering letters from her determined mistress, meets him, the two lonely cast outs find sanctuary with each other.
But Lepida finds out and sells Thea to a Coastal brothel keeper. Arius fights on, not knowing Thea is alive - and carrying their son...
When a young talented singer, Athena, enslaves the Emperor Domitian, none of the key players in Athena, Arius', or Lepida's realise how their lives are to be intertwined through some of the most earth shattering events any of them could have ever imagined...
I look forward to the sequel!
I liked Thea and Arius and positively loathed Lepida - she made me want to repeatedly slap her silly face, the historical details appear well researched and the plot rolls along at a rollicking rate.
9/10 - well deserved!
