From the back cover:
These wonderful stories are based firmly in realities that are recognizable the world over: for Yuko Tsushima's women clean bathrooms, worry about teenage children and live emotional lives full of contradictions.
A young single mother on an outing to the seaside comes face to face with her own frustrations and the resentment of her children; a woman wiats up for her teenage daughter, refusing to admit to herself that her child has run away; another tries desperately to hold on to a private life in the face of her controlling male relatives.
Yuko Tsushima has won a number of literary prizes, including the Yasunari Kawabata prize 1983 for "The Silent Traders", included in this volume.
