Book Description:
Some secrets just won't stay buried.
They didn't mean it. They didn't mean to hit the boy. There was a party, and it was an accident...that wasn't who they were. They were pre-law, a football player, bound for New York. No one could know, so Barry, Julie, Helen, and Ray swore one another to secrecy. But now, a year later, someone knows. Julie receives a haunting, anonymous threat: "I know what you did last summer." The dark lie is unearthed, and before the four friends know it they need to outsmart a killer...or they will be the next to die.
Originally released in 1973 and made into a horror movie starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. This book has the movie tie-in cover.

My Review: This was a fun teen horror story. The four kids who accidentally hit and killed a boy last summer are receiving messages and realize that someone else knows what they did.

I'm taking this from the Teens Bookbox. It's a movie-tie-in edition for the 1997 film.
Later: I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, but it turns out that {gasp!} the book is not really very much like the movie at all {wry grin}. Oh, the setup's roughly the same - four teens were involved in an accidental death and were convinced to cover it up to save their reputations, possible college and career hopes, etc., and then find that somebody "knows what they did last summer" and is out to get them. But the details, the identity of the victim, and the nature of the revenge - that's all very different.
I actually preferred the book's take on things (despite some plotholes), and wish that someone had opted to film that version - could have been a great psychological-suspense story with the right handling. The actual film takes the more typical slasher-fic form, and I suppose it's OK for that style, but that's not what the book's about. Ah, well!
[There's a TV Tropes page for the film, with reference to the book as well.]
