Received by mail yesterday from Australia, together with Stickers and a Ballycumber magnet - many many thanks!

I did read it immediately although I really really didn't have the time (and so was very tired the next day :( ) but it was interesting.

The story: 17 years ago, a high school girl, Jean, was found murdered on the beach in a very small town; her boyfriend Bailey, with a bad reputation and last seen with her, agreed to a plea bargain and later escaped from prison. Now after living a lawful, normal life (under another name) as fugitive from the law for over 15 years, a routine stop caught him and his father, close to death from cancer, hires Kinsey to find evidence of his innocence, and if possible the real murderer. She stays at the motel the family owns and tries to find clues gone stale.

Getting used to a very small town compared to the normal-sized city she lives in is difficult for her. The dysfunctional family dynamic she observes close-hand also prompts her to think about families in general and whether her growing up as orphan wasn't a benefit in disguise. Central are the questions of who slept with, and fathered a child, two girls/ women. Several false leads and a chase after discovering a body, when Kinsey briefly becomes a fugitive from the the law herself, finally get Kinsey to the real murderer.

This time it's not the usual motive, but rather, insanity - and two people with different madness. Similar to other detective stories, where even the sharp-eyed detective, can't see who among the ordinary-looking people is a real murderer, this time Kinsey, despite being very close to her over several days, didn't notice the madness and was taken in, like everybody else, by the act perfected over decades.
