1986 Knopf hardcover stated First Edition with worn dust jacket of the spy thriller. With a $5 penciled price inside the cover, and a faded receipt dated 042687 tucked inside for $5 plus 7% sales tax, from Black Oak Books, Berkeley, I deduce that this copy came from that used book store, when it used to be located as of a few years ago at 1491 Shattuck on the north side of town. The store has since fallen victim to the Great Recession and the Internet, since it has now moved across town to San Pablo on the Emeryville/Oakland border.

This was on my list of best past thrillers to read, when I bought it a couple years ago for 25 cents from the sale shelf of Dimond Library, here in Oakland.

I can let this go after I read:
1961 Call for the Dead [read 2009]
1962 A Murder of Quality [read 2010]
1963 The Spy Who Came In From the Cold [read 2010]
1965 Bread on the Waters (short story in Playboy) [read 2011]
1968 A Small Town in Germany [read 2011]
1974 Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy [read 2014]
1977 The Honourable Schoolboy [read 2024]
1979 Smiley's People [read 2020]
1983 The Little Drummer Girl [read 2021]

Edit October 27, 2021: This was okay, but I just skimmed to end for time. I find this author to be more tedious than read-worthy, so I don't think I have a big loss here. I currently have this ranked at #5572 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.
