A suspense novel. Originally published in 1958, this print by Crest Book, 1959.

Insurance company asks - forces - one of its salesmen, Jack, help in locating a suspected Mrs. Bluebeard. This man got a life insurance by the company for his wife, worth $ 100,000, a few months before the wife's sudden death in a canoe accident. Jack sold the insurance policy, but he couldn't have known this Bluebeard was one in a series of six similar cases over the past few years; all of the men had Andrew as first name, all of them had a wife die in a fall or a canoe accident, and all policies were in different companies, and each case was in a different part of the country. Now the company wants to recover their losses, and find this Mr. Bluebeard and trap him.

As a trap, they are trying to get him marry a woman they hired for the purpose, Gene Taylor. She's a hard-boiled case, not of the type that appears to this wife-killer, but Jack tries to make her of the correct type, and off goes the trio with an odd private eye, Miles.

A vintage story as it's over 60 years old by now, but very fascinating, from around the same time the first James Bond stories were written. 160 pages (rather small print) but it seems the correct length for the story. I like the 1960s style; it's fascinating to see how many small details in life have changed, how suspense, spy novels, and thrillers have evolved since, and how enjoyable the old suspense stories still are.

From the back cover a bit more teaser:

"Coffee?" she asked.
Jack nodded and stared at her uneasily, sharply aware of the powerful pull of the soft graceful body not quite hidden by the thin robe.
"How did a doll like you come to take a job like this?"
"Why not?"
"It's a risky business marrying a man who kills his wives."
She shrugged.
"How you going to hook him?"
"I'll manage."
She would manage all right. The vision it conjured up filled Jack with jealousy - and fear.
"Okay" he snapped. "So you marry this homicidal creep. Then what?"
"When he tries to kill me, we catch him." She smiled up at him. "Cream and sugar?"

"The Eighth Mrs. Bluebeard.... a fast-paced thriller aout a fast-stepping Bluebeard who married only to murder'"; 'a real honey of a suspense yarn'. - Columbus Dispatch"

Received the books from the Mystery VBB today. Thanks very much.

When a book originally cost 25 cents, you know it's ancient (copyright 1958) but that's what makes it fun, mysteries were written in a whole different style back then. I'm looking forward to reading this one.

Released on the BookCrossers Only Buffet Table at the 2011 10th Anniversary BookCrossing Convention, since it is old and fragile and I don't know if it would withstand a wild release.
