To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It's where he was born and where he and his Ma eat and play and learn. At night, Ma puts him safely to sleep in the wardrobe, in case Old Nick comes.
Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it's the prison where Old Nick has kept her for seven years, since she was nineteen. Through ingenuity and determination, Ma has created a life for herself and her son, but she knows it's not enough for either of them. Jack's curiosity is building alongside Ma's desperation -- and Room can't contain either of them for much longer...
Told entirely in the inventive, often funny voice of Jack, Room is a celebration of the resilient bond between parent and child, and a brilliantly executed novel about a journey from one world to another.

I bought this book when it was first on the best seller list, but then I was afraid to read it. As it was about to be released as a movie, I decided it was finally the right time.
Room was a very inspiring story. Ma was able to construct an entire world within the room he was born in. She made sure there was as much variety, exercise and optimism as she could manage.
What a story of courage!

Safely in my hands
Like Fracula, I was afraid to read it as I wasn't in a happy place myself. But the book is really very positive. And a great read. Ma was such a good mother, making a wonderful ...well maybe that is too generous...life for the two of them, in such awful circumstances. I wanted to get this read before seeing the movie...and it is at the cheap theatre already!
I am taking this book to our monthly bookcrossers meet up at Cravings - the second Saturday of every month- to pass on to the next reader.
Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing April meet-up. After watching the movie, I really wanted to read the book, so thankfully it showed up again in the group.
The book was a little hard to get into at the beginning. Everything is told from Jack's perspective and as a five year old, he isn't going to think like an adult (his bad grammar was like a stab to the heart every time I read it). But once I got past that, it was an enjoyable book. You have much more optimism when the story is told from the child's POV. I was also quite impressed with how much of the plot was kept for the movie. So despite the subject, this isn't a depressing read.
Passing on this book to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing May meet-up.
Picked up at the May Calgary BookCrossing meetup.
I listened to this on audiobook -- which in retrospect was a bad choice.
The voice actor that played the boy really whiny and annoying. That said, the story sucked me in and kept me interested cover-to-cover.
I definitely recommend this book. Emphasis on book.

Picked up at get together
I wasn't completely sure what to expect from this book when I started it, but it drew me right in. Even told from the point of view of a boy, I thought it did a good job depicting the complexities of the situations and emotions of the other characters.
Thank you for the interesting read.

Taken to get together!
Picked up at the July Calgary meet up. So much fun and I think this meeting broke a record for the number of books in attendance (mostly due to one particular crosser bring back over 20 books them-self, you know who you are). Really great to see a few members that haven't attended in awhile, welcome back! We had 13 people attend and well over 100 books. This particular one has been added to my book shelf.
Are you in the Calgary area and interested in meeting up with other Calgary BookCrossers? Please check out our facebook group, "BookCrossing Calgary" for details on how. Meeting are held on the second Saturday of every month starting at 11am. Location is unknown, please PM me for information. New Crossers are always welcome.
I have read this great book already, I believe there were multiple copies going around the group. Highly recommend it.

Picked up at the Nov. 2022 Book Crossing meet up
Reading this story through a five year-old boy's perspective added a lightness and naivete to a dark subject matter. Still, the story did not gloss over the difficulties faced by the boy's mother and even the boy as they transitioned in their life and faced the aftermath of their challenging circumstances. This was one of the best books that I read in 2022.
