In 1992, Emory University graduate Christopher McCandless gave away his processions, adopted a new name, and wandered up north into Alaska. Four months later, he was found starved to death in an abandonned bus in the wilderness.

Was McCandless a reckless fool who underestimated the dangers of the wild? Was he a gentle soul with environmental ideals? Was he a courageous explorer, borned a century too late, and just happened to have hard luck? This book attempts to give the answer. While the answer may not be definite, the extensive research likely comes very close to the truth, and allows us a glimpse into the humanity of the tragedy. Most of us will not share McCandless' desire to burn his money and scavenge berries for food, living solo for weeks, but this book makes it easier for us to sympathize and understand him.

The author has taken a lot of pages to talk about other tragic exploration of Alaska, and his personal experience, a detour that seems to wander a bit too far.
