Young, feisty Maisie Dobbs has recently set herself up as a private detective. Such a move may not seem especially startling. But this is 1929, and Maisie is exceptional in many ways.
Having started as a maid to the London aristocracy, studied her way to Cambridge and served as a nurse in the Great War, Maisie has wisdom, experience and understanding beyond her years. Little does she realise the extent to which this strength of character is soon to be tested. For her first case forces her to uncover secrets long buried, and to confront ghosts from her own past...

When I started this book it didn't seem as if it was the first in a series. It's straight in with Maisie opening her own investigative agency. She's had the help of others, with whom she obviously has a shared history but at this point I had no idea how these relationships had been formed.....I felt like I'd missed a bit!
Then the story goes back nearly 20 years...uh oh I thought, this will be a quick fill-in on how Maisie got where she is today - well, yes & no! This part certainly covers the young Maisie's past & we find out how her agency has come about, but it was also so much more - & I really enjoyed this part of the story. It became the tale of a girl growing up & coping with her change in circumstances, then as a young woman in wartime finding love...but I don't want to spoil it for future readers so I'll say no more.
Then back to the "present" - which sees Maisie solving her case & it ending on quite a poignant note. I really enjoyed this & will certainly look out for more in the series.

I picked this up at the York Bookcrossing December Meet-Up at Ye Olde Starre Inn... now on the TBR pile.
Really looking forward to it as I love the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books.

I am a bad bookcrosser... been really bad at journaling now, but as the pile to be released is getting huge, it's spurred me into cracking on!
A lovely book.... gentle and very definitely in the No 1 Ladies etc vein... Not earth shattering, but readable.. I might look at another one if one crosses my path.

I rather liked this! Maisie Dobbs is a lovely character, a sweet idea. The mystery itself is fun - all in all, a pleasant Sunday afternoon sort of read.

Recommended to me by Chuggypig when I 'dropped in' on the York BC meet up tonight.
It may be some time on mt TBR as it looks like yet another series I might get fanatical about once read and I really MUST get on with Sue Grafton ;-)
