Sarah's Key
30 journalers for this copy...
Synopsis:
"Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old Jewish girl, is arrested by the French police in the middle of the night, along with her mother and father. Desperate to protect her younger brother, she locks him in a cupboard and promises to come back for him as soon as she can. Paris, May 2002: Julia Jarmond, an American journalist, is asked to write about the 60th anniversary of the Vel' d'Hiv'--the infamous day in 1942 when French police rounded up thousands of Jewish men, women and children, in order to send them to concentration camps. Sarah's Key is the poignant story of two families, forever linked and haunted by one of the darkest days in France's past."

I completely devoured this book, couldn´t stop reading it! I agree with those of you who prefered Sarah´s story to Julia's. I think the novel´s topic is brilliant and I understand why the author has chosen to tell it in the way she has, but I do wish that we could have been told only Sarah´s story. What a fantastic story that would have been. I don't like the ending at all, I foresaw it and was disappointed when I was right.

Oh no! The story had so much potential, and still I am so disappointed in the end. I agree with previous bookcrossers who have said that it would have been so much better to stick to telling Sarah's story. It was an easy read, though, even if the modern day character, Julia Jarmond, annoyed the h-l out of me, putting up with that lousy husband of hers for so long.... Will sent the book on to Bulgaria as soon as I have bookmaniac70's address.

Like sarabe1, I would say the story had much potential which (IMO) unfortunately was not fully exploited and developed. I didn`t know about Vel' d'Hiv' event and I read with interest the part where the two stories of Sarah and Julia ran together. However, the last part of the book appeared very rushed and weak. I thought the writer could have done much better with more editing. It simply looked like she lost the thread at some point. Anyway, the topic is an important reminder for present and future generations, so thanks for sharing!

I loved the way that Julia Jarmond's investigations revealed more about Sarah's story as they read parallel to each other. The story was gripping, revealing and sometimes horrifying. I never knew anything about the Paris round-ups until I read this book, which really made me feel that it was important to know. One to read if you like books about hard life situations.

Well I read this a lot quicker than I thought I would. Once I started, I was hooked. I loved the way the two stories were intertwined and they switched from Sarah's story to Julia's story. Sarah's story was stronger than Julia's. It was heartbreaking. It is sad to think that although this is only fiction, these horrors actually happened.

I enjoyed this book very much. I especially liked how the two stories are intertwined. Sarah's story is stonger but, up to the middle of the book, I was relieved to be back from time to time in 2002 with Julia's problems. What Sarah had to go through was absolutely horrible and shocking. However, it is important to keep remembering what happened during that time. Never forget - n'ouliez jamais - in order to never, ever repeat those terrible wars.
The last part of the story, taking place in New York City, seems like out of another book, another story... I didn't like the end neither.
Many thanks Boekentrol for sharing this book with us.

I enjoyed reading the book, I didn't know anything about the children in Vel d'Hiv and that's what I want to keep from this book. It was completely shocking! Like so many others before me have mentioned, Sarah's story was better. Julia's story was predictable and even tiring in some points.

I posted this on to QueenSissi in Portugal today.
Sarah, and all the characters whose lives she touched, are still running through my mind. Although this is a work of fiction, the historical foundations present war-time events that I was not aware of but may well still be in the minds of the families involved today.
However, once the two stories (past and present) coincided and Sarah's voice ended, I felt that the narration became rather superficial and rushed in heading towards a conclusion.
I am glad that I read this book- thanks for setting up this bookray, lunacia :-)

I couldn't stop reading it up to a certain point... I have to admit that this book has made me cry like a baby and gave me nightmares, perhaps because I read two books, one after the other, on french jewish children during WWII, and learnt much.
Spoiler - It was one of those books where death seems to follow too quickly and, since there is a lot of tension, it seems to fail in giving readers a sense of relief. Real life doens't have to do that but sometimes books should :).

This subject matter always makes for difficult reading. It is so sad, and in this book you know right from the start that tragedy is imminent. So why do I read books like this which upset me? Because we owe it to these kids, and all the others who didn't come back, to remember and be aware of what happened. And this book contributes to that awareness.
Like other readers have said, I wasn't too keen on the last part of the book. It felt like she had to find a way out of the story. But all in all I enjoyd and appreciated the book. Thank you for sharing, I'm off to PM the next reader.

Although this book is a work of fiction, it was inspired by real events. It is well written and very realistic which makes it hard to read sometimes, especially as you readhow the childern were treated. It made me cry. But most important of all, is the author has educated all who read it, as most likely very few people were unaware of the real Vel' d'Hiv' round up (myself included). I feel that this gives the victims a new voice as the book is read and discussed, so they are not forgotten. It is truly shocking what we humans do to each other!

Great the both stories ran along side each other but i have to say i didnt really bond with Julia. I guess Sarah's story is so strong, Julia's look quite weak beside it.

Just returned from a family holiday on the Goldcoast to find this book waiting for me. Will be able to start it straight away as I just finished my last book. Thank you

I enjoyed the book, a sad story nonetheless, but I am glad the author chose to make her tribute in this way.

The book actually arrived 3 days ago, but I did not have the chance to journal until now. In that time I read it and so did my father-in-law! Neither of us could put it down! Neither of us had heard of Vel' d'Hiv', which I found interesting as my father in law lived through that time period. We both agree with many of you and found the ending weak.

Arrived today, safe & sound! Thanks, Agrace, for sending it to me. As a note to the next reader, it may take me a little while (March/May) to turn this around. But it's on the top of my reading list.

Moved me to tears, more than once. A great book. One I thought about often when I wasn't reading it, and one I learned something from too (hadn't known about the Vel d'Hiv beforehand). I really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing it & for being so patient. I apologize, it took me longer to start this book than I had originally planned, but it will be on to the next reader by early next week!

The book just arrived this morning in the mail - thank you to bshort for sending it with the lovely note, to lunacia for organizing the bookray, and to everyone who has gotten it here! I believe that this is the most well-traveled Bookcrossing book I've ever received.
It's been about a year now since I saw the film, but I still remember it quite clearly. I'm looking forward to reading the original book.
As I'm last on the bookray list, I will contact lunacia to see if there is anyone else that is looking to read it; otherwise, I will try to make a new post in the bookring forum.
