MrPloppy and I felt in need of some post-earthquake retail therapy today, so we splurged on a few books. Found this one second-hand in Liberty Books (which thankfully still exists - one of the few bookshops left on Manchester Street without a red tag).

Fantastic book - totally weird, totally Julian Barnesy (Barnesian? Barnesish?) In a world where originals are not valued any higher than replicas, why go to all the effort of visiting England? Why not visit England, England - all the best bits (according to market surveys and focus groups, that is) condensed into one small island.

Found thanks,
I found this at the memorable Queenstown UnCon, where great fun was had by a gaggle of bookcrossers.
This book shows how dumbed-down some books presently mass-produced are, as it had a rich vocabulary and interesting thinking of mass manipulation, greed, and the mis-use of history. At times I thought a few pages were just weird (the lists of inner monologue, but luckily it was only about three pages).
A read to make you think.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
This little free library was amazing. A great place to put a travelling book.
If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it.
It made a pit stop in my Little Free Library.
