A different cover on the Australian paperback version. This was a light and quick read but the detailed observations, humour and character descriptions were delightful. I work with teenage girls and I was convinced by fourteen year old Plum's tone and outlook. One of the observations on the back cover is: "Will make adult female readers shiver with gladness at being all grown up". This it did! So much 1980 familiarity in the prose, when I was the same age as Plum - fairybread, jam doughnuts, chocolate milk from the tuckshop, Planet Of The Apes, frankfurts, Pop Rocks! I thought ending the book from Maureen's perspective rather than Plum's was really odd. I get (like a rock in the head) that David's life represents new beginnings but felt that those pages spent on Maureen, who for me was only a minor player, were not deserved.
