Love in the Time of Cholera (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century)
5 journalers for this copy...
1/1/11 - Part of my New Year's Resolution is to update journal entries that I didn't write much for. So to be honest, I don't have much to say about this book because I never read it. So I figured I'd share my other copy.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I didn't like most of the characters. Fermina Daza was okay, and I had to respect Leona Cassiani, but Florentino Ariza, the main character around whom the entire book revolves, is REVOLTING. He starts out as a stalker, who occasionally is a voyeur at the local brothel, until he is thwarted in his teenage passion. Then he mopes around like a loser until he is raped, which is one of the greatest highlights of his life in his own estimation and turns him into a sleazy seducer of women. The language used is crude and degrading and incongruent with the professed affection he feels for the 622 women he has affairs with (he is careful to say that he doesn't count quickies). He has a severe case of Madonna-whore complex, idolizing Fermina Daza, to whom he remains "utterly faithful", and treating all the other women he encounters as whores at best. And then, when he is in his mid-60s, his cousins in the countryside entrust their 12 year-old daughter to his care while she is attending convent school. He carefully grooms and seduces her and in the end, when she is barely 15, she kills herself because he has left her for a woman his own age -- Fermina Daza. The women in this book, with the exception of Leona Cassiani, are not believable, because Florentino Ariza is a self-centered egomaniacal pig who defiles and degrades women and even molests children! But luckily, he manages to live happily ever after in the end with the object of his lifelong quest. Who says dreams don't come true?
Quite a few people whose literary taste I respect seem to have really liked this book. I have no clue why. It is considered "great literature." Again, no clue as to why. But, good BookCrosser that I am, I will take it along to meet-up in hopes that someone else might not find the book as disgusting as I did.
Will take this book with me to Westminster for the MaryZee Memorial Meet-up. Whatever does not find a new home with a BookCrosser will be added to the OBCZ shelf at Birdie's.
