Another great book by Lisa Whelchel (Best known as Blair from The Facts of Life). This is written in her friendly, welcoming way as if you are sitting in her living room chatting. The book explores some of the many ways to homeschool. Lisa visits with several families who share how they fit homeschooling into their unique lifestyles and needs. It does a wonderful job explaining different methods and showing that anyone can homeschool no matter their circumstances if they set their mind to it and are open to the possibilities. Great for the veteren homeschooler or those just thinking about it.

I am opening this up as a Book Ring. I encourage homeschoolers, would be homeschoolers, friends/family of homeschoolers and sceptics to join the list. I think it would be great for even those who never plan to homeschool to get an idea of what how some families are educating their children.

How Does a Bookring work?

A book passes from BCer to BCer based on the list of members who've signed up.

To join this bookring please send a PM (private message) to nyisutter and I will add you to the list. New members will be added to the end of the list in the order in which I receive the messages. Please be aware that this is an international bookring and you may have to ship overseas. If you have a hard time shipping overseas, you can let me know and I will try to place you accordingly on the list, but I can't guarantee you won't have to ship internationally. The list of members will be listed here at the book's home page.

As a member, you will receive the book from the person listed before you. When you receive the book please make a journal entry stating that you’ve received it. Please read it as soon as you can (don't rush, just be reasonable about the length of time). After you read the book, please journal again with your comments. You will then need to PM (private message) the next person on the list for their mailing address. Mailing the book by media mail is the least expensive way (or surface mail if it's sent overseas). Please pay for delivery confirmation if mailing in the US (about 55 cents) and post the number in your journal.

If you are unable to reach the person after you on the list in a reasonable amount of time, then PM the next person on the list. If any questions come up, please send me a PM. Thank you all for participating in this bookring.

If there is no one on the list after you, please return the book to nyisutter. I will send the book out again if I get more participants.

It was interesting reading about the different methods people use to homeschool their children - I've been homeschooling my younger daughter for 2 years now and have used some of the ideas mentioned in this book already. The list of resources in the back of the book is fabulous.

It's now on it's way to melissaparcel! DC # 0303 1290 0001 5670 4717

Excellent book! The first book I have read that doesn't really get into the specifics of how, but describes very well all of the different types of people who homeschool, and the methods they use. I will be recommending this book to others.

Will send off to CurtAngel on Thursday.

This book is very interesting. I liked reading about how people homeschooled and how homeschooling helped them do things they wouldn't be able to do otherwise. I think it might have helped me understand the different methods of teaching a little bit more "hearing" it from the parents who did it themselves. The resources listed look to be helpful as well.
On a personal level I didn't care for the whole "sit down have some coffee" bits, but it does contribute to the informal nature of the book.
I'm still "thinking" about homeschooling, but now I feel more secure about the idea having read others personal stories.

A surprisingly well ballanced representation of the more standard forms of homeschooling, and a lot of good basic infrotmation.... More surprisingly, she doesn't Ramrod her religion throught the book... I was expecting to have to sort throught he fundiMENTAList rehtoric, and was pleased to find I could just read and enjoy rather than fight the propganda... I'll PM you, but I need the your adress to9 return it.

UPDATE: 03-21-2004

Took me a long time to get to this one, I had moved and actually forgot I had it. Found the book in a box and got it read this week. What a great resource, gives me plenty of things to think of and keep in mind as we make a decision on homeschooling (ok, so she's only 10 months old but hey, we want to be ready lol).

Will pass on to the next in line this week.

Journal Entry 17 by busybooklover on Friday, May 7, 2004
This arrived in today's mail... thanks for sharing... will read and pass along to next in line quickly.
6/29/04 UPDATE: sorry-- I had to finish up "The Other Boleyn Girl" P. Gregory, Bookring and it took me longer than I anticipated... I should get this finished up within a few days. Will PM next in line now to confirm address. ~BBL
7/9/04 UPDATE: I got next in line (kisssie) address and will mail this off. My daughter actually entered a Pre-Kindergarten (summer 2 week session) to see how we both liked it. She LOVES it and it will allow me to spend a few hours a day with my younger daughter. I read part of this book and enjoyed what I did read. I didn't want to put the time into finishing when the decision was resting heavily on how she did in her first away from home experience. She really thrived within a more social structured environment... so that is what we will do. Thanks for making this available! On it's way to kisssie now!
